The Chruch of Santiago is a monument of Romaic trait that has endured changes over time, with Gothic and Mannerist. The facade of this church dates back to the 18th century.
Inside the Church , we can see a chapel , ordered to build in 1240, by Maria Gil and a 14th century"Pieta', which according to Jose Saramago , is the most admirable of this church.
On the bottom end, you can see frescoes, from at least 2 seasons. In the chancel there are traces of a triptych consisting of figures representing our Lady , saint James ( Patron Saint) and St Peter ( which many claim to be a representation of Pedro Alvares Cabral).
In connection with this church , lays the Pantheon of the Cabrais that was still under construction in 1483, where you can see tombs of various elements of the family , including Pedro Alvares Cabral.
Located in one of the Portuguese pilgrimage path to Composteka, " Via Da Estrela " ( Route of the Star) , which is signaled in Belmonte , benefiting from the old Roman road that would link Merida to Braga , the Santiago Church / Saint James Church would be a place , in which the pilgrims would find spiritual comfort during their journey.
