ETHNIC DIVERSITY
There are 49 officially recognized
ethnic groups in Laos representing 4 ethno –linguistic families: Tai- Kadai,
Mon Khmer, Hmong-Mien and Tibeto –Burmese. These in turn all have branches and
sub groups that anthropologists further classify into 230 distinctive entities.
The vibrant traditional culture and indigenous knowledge of this diverse
population permeates into all aspects of Lao life.
The north has the highest
concentration of ethnic groups, followed by the eastern and central regions
extending to the border with Vietnam.
Known for traditional hospitality,
it is possible to visit many ethnic groups village –we suggest employing a
local guide to assist you with cultural interpretation and the language
barrier.
Try some local food and enjoy a drink with your hosts. Ask about the
production of handicrafts and indigenous products such as textiles and
basketry, or about the many uses of bamboo.Note the different agricultural
practices and belief systems practiced by the different ethnic groups. Their
ingenuity and lifestyles of will leave a lasting impression and represent an
irreplaceable part of the national heritage.
