CASA DE MEMORIA (HOUSE OF MEMORY)
Located at the former Patria plastic factory , on Av, Conde
Margaride, Casa da Memoria, is a place for the residents of Guimaraes to meet ,share and reflect on
their roots,traditions and memories. Here you will find stories, documents,
facts and objects that guide you through the different aspects of the Guimaraes community across the ages;
from Pre history to the founding of Portugal, from Rural Soceties to the
Industrialization of the Ave Valley and Contemporary times.
Through a chronological reading of history it is also
possible to learn about the moments that formed the region.Beyond simple
contemplation ,Casa da Memora gives visitors an experience.Dive into the
essence of the living community that form the distinct identity of Guimaraes.
The strret Rua D.Joao I, initially the entrance into the
city for those arriving from Porto, was one of the busiest streets of
Guimaraes.Its ambience somewhat dark and somber, shows the signs of time and
derives from narrowness of the street and from the old houses with wooden
balustrade balcones.
On the street Rua D Joao I two important city monuments
can be seen : The Padrao de D Joao I, from the 16th century –which
in the 19th century was slightly displaced from its original place
and the building of the religious order Veneravel Ordem Terceira de
S.Domingos,from the 19th century, its construction began in 1836 and
it was solemnly inaugurated in 1840.
