PHILIPPINES FESTIVALS
The
Philippines is knowns for its colorful, extravagant and jovial celebrations.
And is apparent every time Filipinos celebrate event like birthdays, baptism, weddings,
graduation and many more. Each town and barangay or locality in the country
celebrates their own fiestas or feasts, a tradition whose roots date back from
when the country was under the Spanish rule.
Santa
Cruzan and Flores de Mayo are feasts celebrated in the month of May. These
feasts are religious in origin as is almost all fiestas in the Philippines. The
feasts culminate in the streets where handsome you men and lovely young ladies
parade in lavish Filipino traditional costumes.
The Ati-Atihan Festival is originally
celebrated in Kalibo, aklan although other places like Cebu and Iloilo have
similar festivals. Participants of the festival paint their body black and wear
colourful tribal costumes and dance in the streets to the beat of drums while
shouting “ Hala bira!” which mean “ Go Hit!” The Panagbenga Festival in Baguio
celebrated during the month of February is one of the most attended festivals
in Northern Luzon. The festival is conducted with colourful , lavish and
creative floats made entirely of locally grown flowers.
