TREKKING MOUNT KANLAON
Mount Kanla- on Natural Park (MKNP) is one of active volcanoes and the 16th highest peak in the country. Its summit is measured 2435 meters above sea level and considered the highest peak in central Philippines.
MKNP serves as a common boundary for the provinces of Negros Occidental and Oriental.
Climbing Mount Kanla-On is a challenge, even to professional mountaineers. There are 4 options in trekking to the summit: the Wasay Trail, the Guintubdan Trail, the Mananawin Trail and the Mapot Trail.
The two jump off points, the Wasay Trail and Guintubdan Trail, on the Occidental side are the most preferred trails because of the lush tropical forest that shelters trekkers from the direct heat of the sun while the Mannawin and Mapot Trails, on the Oriental side, lead trekkers through open vegetable areas and steep slopes.
The Wasay Trail located in Minoyan, Murcia is 14.5 kilometers trek or 2 days walk of gradual progression while the Guintubdan Trail in La Carlota City is about 8.5 kilometers or 8 hours trek to the summit.
The Mananawin Trail in Brgy.Masulog, Canlaon City is the most daring but the shortest trail to the summit at approximately 6 kilometers while the Mapot Trail in Brgy. Malaiba is about 7 kilometers walk to the summit.
On 8 May 1997, Presidential Proclamation 1005 under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) Law declared Mt Kanlaon as “Natural Park”. It has a total land area 24,557 .60 hectares covering the cities of Bago, Canlaon, San Carlos and La Carlota and the towns of La Castellana and Murcia.
