PERIYAR TIGER RESERVE (PTR) with an area of 925km is a
representative sample of the Western Ghats. It has all the elements of tropical
biodiversity with high species richness and endemism and is the oldest and
largest Protected Area (PA) in Kerala Originally constituted as a Game
Sanctuary ( Nelikampetty Game Sanctuary)
in 1934., the sanctuary was rechristened as Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950
and Periyar Tiger Reserve in 1978. Through the implementation of Indi Eco
development Project from 1996 to 2004, PTR has emerged as a national role model
for participatory conservation.
COMMUNITY BASED ECOTOURISM PROGRAMMES:
CBET programmes are the hallmark of Periyar Tiger Reserve.
These community managed Ecotourism programmes aim at empowering local and
tribal communities which help in the conservation of the park. By availing CBET
programmes, one will be indirectly contributing in the conservation of Periyar
Tiger Preserve.
Visitor Facilities: Information Center at the Boat Landing (
Thekkdy) and Ecotourism Information Cente ( near Ambadi Junction) provider
visitors with all necessary details regarding various Ecotourism Programmmes of
PTR.

Closure Period: Open throughout the year
Special Attractions: Boating in Periyar Lake and Community
Based Ecotourism (CBET) programmes.
NATURE WALK -GREEN WALK
Green Walk is an
interpretation programme offering excellent opportunity to watch wildlife.
Different
nature trails
traversing diverse habitats from the trekking routes, generally 4 to 5 km in
length. The trails
often pass
through evergreenand moist deciduous forests interspersed with marshy
grasslands.
The programme is
offered in few time slots and lasts for 3 hours. A maximum of 6 persons can go
for
trekking at a
time along each trail, covering the Anvachal/ Anchuruli area, accompanied by a
trainer
tribal guide.
JUNGLE SCOUT - BORDER
HIKING
Border hiking is
a conversation oriented hard trek taking up a full day, starting at 8am and
ending at
5pm, covering
15km.The route passes through undulating terrains. Altitudinal range of 900
meters to 1300 meters will be covered and trekkers obtain glimpses of the lofty
escarpments bordering the park watershed and the vast plains down below. Gaur ,
Sloth Bear , Elephant etc are often sighted along this route apart from birds
and butterflies. A maximum of 6 people can take the programme and 2 slots run
parallel. The trekkers will go with 2 guides and an armed forest
guard.Vegetarian refreshments provided.
BAMBOO RAFTING –
A UNIQUE VOYAGE ACROSS THE PERIYAR LAKE
Bamboo rafting is
dawn to dusk range hiking and rafting programme through some of the richest
forest tracts of Periyar Tiger Reserve. Startng at 8 am from the boat landing,
a mosaic of habitats will be traversed before the party gets into bamboo rafts.
The forest is
rich in bird life and arboreal animals like Gant squirrel and Nilgiri langur.
Rafting lasts for about 3 hours and one gets a panoramic view of forest cad
hills reflected on the lake. Animals like elephants, Gaur and Sambar deer are
sighted close to the edges of the lake.
The team returns
the boat landing by about 5 pm. An armed guard and guides will accompany
tourists .Tea,
snacks and packed lunch is served on route. This package is an excellent
programme for
both professional
and amateur nature lover to experience the beauty of nature.
BAMBOO GROVE- ECO
LODGE & CENTRE
Bamboo Grove is
an eco-lodge for experiential learning run exclusively to support local
communities. The 15 bamboo huts with hygienic and modern furnishings are placed
between thickets. The ambience of Bamboo Grove provides an opportunity to
listen to the whistling of bamboo culms, chirping of birds from the swamps of
surrounding meadows.

TRAIL
In the Tiger
Trail, nature lovers are in the hands of a team of guides hardy and dependable
who know the forest and its ways intimately. These people were once poachers
who have been converted
Into protectors
of the forest and now are parts of the protection force of PTR. This is an
adventurous camping and trekking programme of 1 night or 2 night’s duration. T
