A TASTE OF TRADITIONAL CUISINE.
Malaysian cuisine is influenced by a variety of ethnic
groups, mainly Malay, Chinese and Indian. Each has a wide variety of
gastronomic delights. When it comes to Malay cuisine, there are different
specialties from each state. For example, the states bordering Thailand share a
common affinity for spicy food.
Two famous breakfast specials that you will enjoy during
your homestay are roti canai and nasi lemak. Roti canai is a round; flat bread
made from wheat flour and is cooked on a hot plate. It is usually eaten with
lentil or meat curry. Nasi Lemak is rice cooked in coconut milk. It is served
with ikan bilis (anchovies), sambal (chili paste), boiled egg , fried peanuts
and slices of cucumber.
Popular Malaysian lunch and dinner dishes include nasi
kandar and more goring. The former is famous in Penang, but can be found
nationwide.It is fragrant rice, serve with fish or meat curry and a variety of
gravy. The latter is popular noodle dish that is usually served with meat and
vegetables. Nasi dagang, which is common in Terengganu and Kelantan, consists
of glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk. It is usually served with fish curry, sambal and cucumber pickle.
Nasi goreng, which is Malay style fried rice, is a wholesome
dish that includes diced m
eat, vegetables and a fried egg. For variety, try
nasi campur, which literally means “ mixed rice”. You will be served with a
plate of white rice and a selection of dishes laid out buffet style which
includes meat, seafood and vegetables.
The ever popular satay consists of succulent chunks of chicken,
mutton or beef, which are marinated in a variety of spices. The meat is then
skewered on thin sticks, barbecued over charcoal fire and served together with
a sweet and spicy peanut sauce. Served as accompaniment are portions of Ketupat
( rice cakes ) , cucumber cubes and sliced onions.
During tea time, you will be treated to delicious local
desserts and cakes.
