HANDICARFT
MALAY HANDICRAFTS ARE ARTISTIC AND INTRICATE. YOU WILL
DEFINITELY CHERISH THEM AS MEMENTOES.
Fascinating handicraft - making activities can also be
observed during your homestay in a
Malaysian village. Various techniques are demonstrated and visitors are even
encouraged to try their hand at creating their own souvenirs.
Predominantly produced in the east coast states, the world
renowned batik cloth is worn by Malaysian attending formal ceremonies or
evening engagements. It is either hand painted or printed and is made using dye
and wax. Attractive motifs and colours adorn this cloth, which is usually worn
as a sarong by those staying in rural areas and kmapungs. Batik is a popular
souvenir with visitors too.
Weaving is an intricate art
that is practiced in many kampungs.
Another traditional craft found in some Malaysian villages
is the mengkuang mat. These mats are made from mengkuang leaves, which are also
used to make handy household items like dish covers, hats , floor mats , table
mats and baskets. The leaves of these
plants are stripped of thorns and split into equal-sized strands. They are then
soaked , dried and dyed before they are
ready to be woven into various items.
Try your hand t weaving them under the supervision of local
experts. Crafted with skill and techniques that are centuries old, they make
ideal gifts and souvenirs.
