MALAYSIA KUALA LUMPUR - TROPICAL ENCLAVES

Numerous parks and green areas provide the city with a garden like ambience. These green lungs are beautifully landscaped and abound with lush tropical foliage and soothing water features. The National Zoo and several other parks afford you a closer look at a wide variety of animals . Most of these tropical enclaves are located just minutes away from the city center.


1. KL LAKE GARDENS
Enjoy verdant greenery in this refreshing enclave in the middle of a bustling city. KL Lake Garden is the city's premier park, sprawling over 200 acres. Built around 2 lakes, this tropical garden has vistas of exotic blooms , luxuriant foliage, imposing sculptures , majestic raintrees amd creative theme parks . 2. ORCHID &HIBISCUS 
Admire 800 varieties of rare and exotic orchids here. Visitors can buy their favourite varieties at the Orchid Bazaar held weekly on Sunday. The adjacent Hibiscus Garden showcases an assortment of the colourful blooms, known locally as the Bunga Raya , Malaysia's national flower.

3. KL BUTTERFLY PARK
Marvel at more than 6000 butterflies  consisting of over 120 species . The park recreates the natural habitat of the butterfly , with a vast variety of exotic plants and multi -hued blooms. Stroll along here to take a closer look at the various colours and sizes of these delicate creatures. Special attractions include the huge Raja Brooke, Iswara, Malayia, Lacewing , Five Bar Swordtail, Yellow Tip, Indian Leaf and Lime Butterfly species. Housed within the park are a butterfly nursery and breeding area, insect museum and souvenir shop.

4. KL BIRD PARK 
Reputed to have the largest free flight walk in aviary in the world, this park is home to 3000 or more splendidly colored birds of 200 local and foreign species. Located within the lake gardens; this brilliantly landscaped, semi natural 21 acre park houses exotic and amazing birds such as the Bird of Paradise, Changeable Hawk Eagle , Rhinoceros Hornbill and more. After your visit, enjoy a delicious meal at the Hornbill Restaurant ,built in the style of a traditional Malay House.

5. ASEAN SCULPTURE GARDEN
Explore this uniquely landscaped garden to view a collection of prize winning sculptures in wood, marble, iron and bamboo . Exhibits are skillfully crafted by the ASEAN region's finest artists. The garden is situated adjacent to the National Monument and  the vicinity of the KL Lake Gardens.

6. KLCC PARK
This is a beautifully landscaped park with approximately 1900 indigenous trees and palms representing 74  species as well as soothing water features. The park beckons all in the family with a children's playground, a wading pool and a 1.3 km rubberised jogging track. Various murals and sculptures add to its appeal. A delightful attraction here is the Symphony Lake, where 2 fountains provide 150 colourful and dazzling animations.

7. TITIWANGSA LAKE GARDENS
This pleasant oasis in the city consists of a man made lake , a paddock, jogging trails, exercise stations and a children 's playground. Go boating in the lake or take a walk to enjoy the fresh, crisp air and lush green surroundings. By night, the lake provides a stunning reflection of the Petronas Twin Towers .Savour local delights at the restaurant situated within the grounds.

8. NATIONAL ZOO  
Situated just 13 km northeast of KL, the zoo houses some 200 species of animals, birds and reptiles. Spend the day observing tigers, lions, Sumatran rhinos and other wildlife or watch entertaining performances by orang utans, elephants and sea lions at scheduled hours. Children and adults alike will enjoy the horse, camel and elephant rides. Tram rides are an interesting way to explore the zoo. See nocturnal animals such as tigers , tapirs , porcupies and Nile Hippos at their most active hours in the zoo by night on Saturday , Sundays and Public Holidays.

9. BUKIT NANAS FOREST RESERVE
This sanctuary has the distinction of being the oldest as well as the only permanent forest reserve in the heart of the city. Beginning at the slopes of KL Tower, the lowland dipterocarp forest stretches over 10.5 hectares and is home to a diversity of inhabitants. A 1000 year old Jelutong tree * Dyera Consulata) adds to the appeal here. Marvel at the lush foliage in 70 metre  boardwalk or join a guided tour to take a closer look at the trees, bamboos , herbs  and climbers . Visitors can choose from  3 different trails. MALAYSIA KUALA LUMPUR - MARKET SQUARE

1. PASAR SENI ( CENTRAL MARKET) ,JALAN HANG KASTURI
This building designed by architect and engineer TY LEE, is a fine example of Art Deco styles of the 1930s. Central Market used to be the town's wholesale and retail wet market for fresh produce. It was renovated a reopened in 1986 and it was the first example of a heritage building being adapted for a different use. It is now a leading crafts centre in the city

2. JALAN HANG KASTURI SHOPHOUSES
Just a short walk from the Central Market , Jalan Hang Kasturi used to be the spot for provisions such as dried fish and preserved vegetables. Many of the dried goods stores here can still be found today, The pre war shophouses are mostly of Neo -Classical Style.

3. MEDAN PASAR ( MARKET SQUARE)
Situated between Lebuh Pasar Besar and Lebuh Ampang, Market Square refers to the spot once owned by Yap Ah Loy, headman of the Chinese Community. The 3 storey shophouses here are examples of ornate Neo- Classical designs, as characterized by the decorative plaster garlands, roof top gables and balustrades. It was designed in 1907 by AC Hubback , a government architect. The Maybank Finance Berhad and Clock Tower were later addition, boasting classic Art Deco structures. The Tower, built in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of King George IV, features the distinctive Art Deco sunburst motif at its base.

4. LEBUH AMPANG
This bustling street was the traditional preserve of the Chettiars or South Indian moneylenders who were an economic force in the early days. The glazed ceramic tiles, peacocks designs, traditional low benches and chests are some of the distinctive features of this community. Today, the street is still predominantly occupied by Indian traders with restaurants , textile shops and sundry stores.

5. JALAN TUN H.S.LEE
Formerly known as High Street, the stretch of shophouses here are some of the oldest , dating back to the mid 1880s. This was one of the early streets in which the shophouses were rebuilt in brick and tiles. A unique feature here is that the five foot ways are lower than the surface of the road. There is also a strong Chinese influence in this street.

6. CHINATOWN (PETALING STREET)
KL's Chinatown is a bustling and colourful street of shops, restaurants and hawker stalls. Aside from the popular shopping district of Petaling Street, the nearby buildings, clan houses and temple contain evidence of the city's built heritage.Among them are the Lee Rubber Building, Kwong Siew association, Old High street police station, Police Sikh temple and Mariamman Temple.

7. JALAN TUANKU ABDUL RAHMAN
Originally known as Batu Road, this road is now named after the first King of Malaysia. The buildings here reflect the changing trend in architectural design and provide clues as to the period of their construction , including the Utilitarian, Neo classical  and Art Deco traditions. Noteworthy buildings in this zone include Masjid India, PH henry building , coliseum cinema ,coliseum cafe.

MALAYSIA KUALA LUMPUR - PLACE OF WORSHIP

1. MASJID NEGARA
Masjid Negara or the National Mosque is the most distinguished mosque in Kuala Lumpur. It has a unique stylised, star shaped dome representing the 13 states f Malaysia and the 5 pillars of Islam. Its 73 meter high minaret stands impressively against the skyline. Within its beautifully landscaped grounds are pools and fountains. Visitors are required to be appropriately dressed while visiting he mosque.Robes and headscarves will be provided for ladies.

2. MASJID WILAYAH PERSEKUTUAN
Situated on  hillock, this mosque was inspired by 16th century Ottoman architecture . It boasts 22 beautiful domes of various sizes. Its location within  a well manicured garden and surrounded by a most, makes it a sight to behold. The mosque is able to accommodate 17000 worshippers at any time.

3. THEAU HOU TEMPLE
Situated on a hillock, this magnificent Chinese Temple has golden roofed pagodas and strings of lanterns. Located inside are 3 majestic statues of deities, including the main deity Thean Hou. The ornate architecture and scenic surroundings lend a serene atmosphere to the temple. Within its grounds are statues of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. In the basement area, shops sell a variety of items such as woodcarvings and other decorative pieces.

4. SZE YA TEMPLE
This is the oldest Taoist temple in the city with a history dating back ti 1864. Built by Kapitan Cina Yap Ah Loy, one of the founding fathers of Kuala Lumpur, it features an ornate interior and elaborate roof ridges. The temple pays tribute to the deities, Sin Sze Ya and Si Sze Ya,The oracles of the former were said to have guided Yap Ah Loy during the Selangor Civil War. Its rather unusual position behind several shop houses is believed to have been determined by geomancy or feng shui, creating an unusual angle of the walls, arches and stairways.

5. SRI MAHA MARIAMMAN TEMPLE
This stunning Hindu temple is one of the oldest and most elaborate in the country. Its magnificent 22 metre high gate tower and portico are adorned with intricately carved images of Hindu deities.Located within are the deities of the Hindu goddess Maha Mariamman embellished with gold and precious stones. Take in the sights and sounds from peddlers selling strings of jasmine garlands to aromatic incense filling the air.

6. CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MARY THE VIRGIN
This is a fine examples of early English Gothic architecture featuring beautiful stained glass windows, tasselled tile paving and buttresses. The laying of the foundation stone was carried out in 1894 by the British Resident, WH Treacher.  Its design was proposed by AC Norman, a government architect. Of interest here is a pipe organ built in 1895 by Henry Wills, regarded as one of the grea organ builders of his day.

7. MASJID JAMEK
This mosque occupies a historic location at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak River, the birthplace of Kuala Lumpur. Built in 1909, this is the city's oldest surviving mosque and was offically opened by the then Sultan of Selangor. Its design was inspired by Mogul architecture in northern India. Cupolas and minarets top the brick walls and arched colonnades while a 70 feet dome surmounts the prayer hall. Masjid Jamek was the city's principal mosque until the opening of the National Mosque in 1965.

8. MASJID INDIA
Just minutes away from Masjid Jamek is Masjid India. Built in the southern Indian style, this mosque is a 3 storey structure with onion -domed chatris ( open sided umbrella shaped cupolas) as well as arched windows with Islamic motifs. This mosque was first built in 1863 as a wooden hut and underwent several renovations. The present structure was opened by the Sultan of Selangor in 1966 and can accommodate 3500 worshippers. The first floor is for men while the second floor is reserved for women.

MALAYSIA KUALA LUMPUR - HERITAGE SITES

KL's long and colourful history has left a legacy of heritage sites which bear the stamp of various foreign influences. The main heritage zones in the city are Merdeka Square, Market square, China Town ( Petaling Street) and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

1. DATARAN MERDEKA ( MERDEKA SQUARE)
Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square is a good starting point to explore the city's heritage sites. The Union Jack was lowered here on 31 August 1957 marking Malaysia's Independence from colonial rule. Hence the name Merdeka, which means " Independence" in Malay. A 100 metre high flagpole , reputedly the tallest in the world proudly files the Malaysian flag. The Square used to be the focal point of Kuala Lumpur and the field here was the venue for police parade and cricket matches. Today, it is a beautifully landscaped area with gardens, terraces and fountains and a popular spot for photography. Merdeka Square is still an important venue for national events such as National Day Celebrations and street parades.

2. ROYAL SELANGOR CLUB
Adjacent to Dataran Merdeka is the Royal Selangor Club, a chairman mock- Tudor structure. It was founded in 1884 as a small plank building with thatched rood, serving as a social and cricket club for the growing expatriate community. The original building was replaced in 1890 by a 2 storey timber structure designed by AC Norman, a government architect and rebuilt in 1910 with a design similar to a mock Tudor House by architect AB Hubback. In the colonial days, the club was dubbed " The spotted dog" , a nickname purportedly originating from its mixed membership at that time. It was again rebuilt to its present form in 1979 by architect Fong Ying Leong, after a fire razed in the building in 1970. The club is exclusively for members and has a wide range of sporting facilities as well as food and beverage outlets.

3. SULTAN ABDUL SAMAD BUILDING
This remarkable edifice, built in 1897 , was named after the State Ruler and served as the government administration building during the British era. Boasting a Mahometan or Neo Saracenic style, the building is constructed entirely of brick. It was the largest building of its day and was said to be the finest in the Malay states. The stately structure consists of an imposing porch, graceful
horse-shaped arches, shiny copper domes and a 41.2 metres high clock tower. It now houses the Malaysian Supreme and High Courts as well as a handicraft centre. The building makes an impressive landmark when illuminated at night.

4. ISTANA NEGARA
The official residence of His Majesty The King of Malaysia is a stately mansion set within a beautifully landscaped garden. The daily changing of the guard attracts its fair share of visitors and photographers.

5. KL RAILWAY STATION
This splendid building in the heart of the city was the hub for the nation's rail transportation system before the modern KL Sentral Station was built. Its Moorish architecture with graceful arches and minarets makes it one of the city's most photographed landmarks. Equally impressive is the Malayan Railway (KTM) Headquarters overlooking the railway station.

A short drive from the city, towards Cuddalore , you will find an estuary meeting the Bay of bengal. The Chunnambar Boat House offers visitors many activities. Apart from the boat rides, activities and a a trip to the beach try out any restaurant for a quick bit or a full lunch. And if you still havent's had your full of the whispering winds, the lapping waves and rustling leaves, plan to stay overnight. Select from a treetop dwellings or choose to spend the night on a river boat.

2. SPIRITUAL PLACES
It isn't without reasons that Puducherry is referred to as the land of sages. Over a hundred temples - from ornate ones to tress wrapped in sacred cloth - are scattered throughout its geography.

There are also a multitude of churches and mosques amongst the dense placement of temples.
In the midst of these religious icons you will also find an ashram or two.
The mos prominent of these godly places are hard to miss and regardless of your reason to visit Puducherry they are well worth your time.

3. FESTIVAL
International Yoga Festival - since 1992 the Government of Puducherry has conducted the International Yoga Festival from 4th to 7th January an annual demonstration and competition for yoga enthusiast from around the world.

Sri aurobindo Ashram Darshans -The birth anniversaries of " The mother" and  Sri Aurobindo - 21st February and 15th August respectively - attract tens of thousands of devotees from across the world to visit the " Samadhi" . The other darshan days are 24th Apr,17th Nov , 24th Nov and 05th Dec.

Veerampattinam Car Festival
This is a 6 week long celebration e village temple since date immemorial . There is evidence that during French rule, even the Governors would take part in pulling the temple chariot.
Such was the popularity of the presiding deity ( Shri Sengazhuneer Amman)

4. MEMORIALS& MONUMENTS
AAYI MANDAPAM
 King Krishnadevaraya, ruler of the Vijaryanagara Empire while travelling through Pondicherry , knelt before a beautiful building thinking it was a temple. An old man walked up to the king and asked him ," Your Majesty , why are you bowing down in front a harlot's house? "

Enraged the King demanded that the building be torn down Aayi, in  a desperate plea,asked the king, permission to break down the house herself and in its place dig a well for the people. The place was thence known as Aayi Kulam.

Years later, when the French made Pondicherry their capital in India, they faced an acute water shortage. All the wells they dug had salty water. Naopolean III sent an architect to sort out the problem. He built a 5km long tunnel from Aayi Kulam to a park in a town.
When the French king heard Aayi's story , he ordered a monument to be built in her honour.

French War Memorial- The French Memorial , located on Goubert Avenue, is a testament to those brave soldiers who laid down their lives, for their country during the First World War.

The memorial, erected in 1937, is beautifully illuminated on the 14th of July ( Bastille Day) and homage is paid to the brave martyrs.

GANDHI MANDAPAM
This 4 meter square statue, one of the biggest Mahatma Gandhi statue in Asia is surrounded by 8 magnificent granite pillars which were brought from Gingee , a fort some 70 kms from Puducherry. The pillars were erected in 1866, while the statue , placed opposite the old Pier, was inaugurated on 26 January, 1965.

5. HERITAGE
Puducherry is one of the few places in India where the French had set base. Even today a large number of the original buildings can be seen in pristine condition ; easily identifiable in hues of yellow and white. Most of these have been converted to boutique hotels, restaurants or house gorgeous shopping outlets. Two of the most expansive of these colonial bungalows house the State Assembly and the Lt Governor 's residence.

The influence of French occupation also found its way into local housing. Traditional south Indian residences show evidence of this assimilation of culture. And nowhere is this more prominently on display than on Vysial Street - recognised as a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE landmark.

6.BEACHES
VEERAMPATTINAM BEACH
Surprisingly the least visited of the beaches of Pondy, it can be accessed only from Ariyankuppam - the largest coastal village in the UT - about 7 kms from the city . It's proximity to Arikamedu and the artefacts unearthed there prove that it was a popular trading hub even 500 years back.

PARADISE BEACH
Horse riding, amphibious ATV rides, wind surfing , kayaking and boating make this the favourite spot for a whole lot of people. You can also  to spend a night on a house boat  up in the treehouse.

PROMENDADE BEACH
This mile long walkway -reclaimed from the ocean -is the crowning glory of the city. When closed to vehicular traffic , from 5pm to 7am every day, it transformed into a social hub. Health enthusiasts , foodies, families , kids on an assortment of wheels and tourists alike converge on this stretch for a dose of clean air salted by the cooling breeze of the Bay of Bengal!

7. PARKS
Puducherry prides itself on its greenscapes. It's well planned streets in the inner city are neatly lined with all manner or colourful shrubbery, creepers and trees. Even on the outskirts of the expanded territories you will find little splashes of green in the form of ageing trees and municipal parks.

BOTANICAL GARDEN
The garden was started in 1826 by the French colonists as a laboratory to experiment on and analyze crops that could be cultivated in the region.It features a running toy train , an aquarium, a coffee shop , an amphitheatre as well as a beautiful rock garden.

BHARATHI PARK
Proof of the French settler's love of gardens,the park is located in the heart of this erastwhile colony, just a stone's throw from the Promenade Beach.

This oasis of green was built around Puducherry's most iconic monument- the Aayi Mandapam and is flanked by the Raj Nivas, the Legislative Assembly, the Cerclede Pondicherry and other buildings of historical value forming what is referred to as the " Place de Gouvernment" or the Government Square.

8. TRIVA
There is no doubt that this jewel on the east coast is a great holiday destination. Its beauty has been the inspiration for books and the backdrop for many a movies spanning Kollywood, Bollywood and even Hollywood.

LIFE OF PI is renowned for the CGI tiger, but the entire first part of Ang Lee's film was shot on location in the coastal town of Puducherry, where the blend of French colonial ad Indian cultures is unique in south India and a true one off for travellers. Some of the places the movie was shot are the French Quarters , Flower Market , Botanical Gardens and the old Pier.

9. ACTIVITIES
MUSEUM -located on Saint Louis Street , close to the Raj Nivas, The Puducherry Museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm , on all days save Mondays and National Holidays. In here you will find rare bronze and stone sculptures from the Pallava and Chola dynasties excavated from Arikamedu, as well as relics from the Roman Empire.

SCIENCE CENTRE & PLANETARIUM
This is a great place for fun and learning for kids aged 4-12 years. The science centre has a Demonstration Corner, the children's Corner ,a hall for marine life exhibits , fun science gallery , the science park and a digital planetarium

BIRDWATCHING
If you are an avid bird watcher or love to shoot - only with a camera though -then make sure you are in Puducherry anytime between October and February. Over 160 species of birds, both aquatic and terrestrial, have been observed in the area, including the Darter, the Black headed Ibis, the spot billed Pelican, the Eurasian Spoon Bill and the Painted Stork. As if that wasn't enough over 60  species of butterflies have been spotted in the Sanctuary including endemic species such as the Common - banded Peacock and the Crimson Rose. The best places to catch a glimpse of nature's abundance are the two largest fresh water bodies in Puducherry.

1. PONGAL ( JANUARY)
Pongal is the harvesting festival that marks the end of monsoon season. One of the most important occasions of TAMIL NADU , the rural based festival begins sometimes in mid January.

2. ARUBATHUMOOVAR FESTIVAL ( MARCH - APRIL)
The day witnesses processions which crowd up the lanes of Mylapore. the 63 bronze idols of Kapaleeswarar and Nayanmars Temple are decorated and driven on carriers with huge ceremonial pomp for the devotees to pay obeisance.

3. PILLAIYAR CHATHURTHI/ VINAYAGAR CHATHURTHI ( AUGUST -SEPTEMBER0
Ganesh Chathurthu , popularly known as Pillaiyar Chathurth is celebrated with a lot of zest. The state of government has taken an initiative towards making it eco friendly by marking 5 spots in Chennai for idol immersion, fixing the height of the idol to be made and instructing about preparation of the idol with eco friendly materials.

4. KARTHIGAI DEEPAM ( NOVEMBER)
Celebrated after Diwali , Karthigai deepam falls on the full moon day of November /December . The day is marked by decorating houses with kolams or murals, putting lamps or deepam on balconies , windows and doors.

INDIA TAMIL NADU CHENNAI CITY - TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

1. ELLIOT BEACH
The favourite rendezvous for youngsters, it is named after Edward Elliot, who was the Governor of Madras at that time. The beach is home to The Karl Schmidt Memorial which commemorates a Dutch mariner, who died here while saving a man from drowning.

2. THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
This society was established by madame HP Blavatsky and Col HS Olcott to spread various religions and philosophical theories. Initially founded in New York, it was shifted to India with Mumbai as headquarters were relocated to Adyar in Chennai. Having shrines of all faiths, a Garden of Remembrance , a century old library and a research centre on oriental arts, it has an ancient Banyan Tree covering over 40000 sq ft on its campus

3. KALAKSHETRA
The state is well known for its contribution to Bharathanatyam. It has many gurukul and training institutes that create future exponents. One of them is Kalakshetra, the school of famous danseuse Rukmini Devi Arundale who founded it in 1936; it came to be also known as " The Temple of Arts:. The centre provides training to young students and has played a prominent role in keeping role alive the classical heritage.

4. GUINDY NATIONAL PARK
The Guindy National Park , earlier the property of Gilbert Rodericks was used as hunting preserve; it was bought by the then Madras Government in the year 1821. Among the flora and fauna , Guindy houses about 14 types of animals and the avifauna exceeds 37 varieties.

5.CHENNAI SNAKE PARK & CHILDREN'S PARK
Just adjacent to Guindy National Park is the famous Snake Park . It was established in 1972 and houses a variety of snakes such as king cobra, pythons, vibers etc. The Park is quite popular among children and herpetologists.

6. KAPALEESWARAR TEMPLE
The original Kapaleeswarar Temple was built in the 7th century by the Pallava kings but was destroyed by the Portuguese. The present structure was built in the 16th century by the Vijayanagar kings. It has beautiful paintings and bronze sculptures of the 63 Saivaite saints in the courtyard.

7. SANTHOME BASILICA
The Santhome Basilica gets its name from St . Thomas, an apostle of Jesus, who is believed to have come to India sometime in 52 AD. The cathedral was constructed at the site where the remains of St Thomas were entombed. Situated to the south of Marina Beach, the present structure has been several renovations after the foundation stone was laid on 2nd July , 1523. A statue of Virgin Mary, imported from Portugal is also housed here.

8. MARINA BEACH
The 13 kms long Marina Beach is the second longest in the world. The shore houses samadhis or " final resting places" of earlier Chief Ministers of the state like MG Ramachandran , CN Annadurai and many more. While here, one can also marvel at the beautiful edifices which are counted among the best in Chennai. The famous Madras University is also located nearby.

9. SEMMOZHI POONGA
Classical Language Park or Semmozhi Poonga, as it is called in Tamil, is a botanical garden considered among the best in the world. Located near the Anna flyover , the 20 acres garden has been meticulously landscaped by the Chennai Horticulture Department. It has more than 500 species of plants, in addition to the 80 pre existing trees, of which some are more than 100 years old.

10. SHRI PARTHASARATHY TEMPLE
Dating back to the 8th century, the Parthasarathy Temple os believed to be the oldest temple in Chennai. It was previously constructed by the Pallava kings and was further renovated by the Vijayanagar rulers. The temple is a combination from the time of Pallavas, Cholas and Vijayanagar on its walls.

11. VALLUVAR KOTTAM KODAMBAKKAM 
The carved temple on a chariot is a memorial of Tiruvalluvar , the renowned Tamil poet-saint; its structure reminds one of the temple chariots of Thiruvarur. It houses his life size figure and all 133 chapters from Thirukkural depicted in bas relief. the auditorium here can accommodate up to 4000 people at a time.

12. FORT ST GEORGE
The mighty fort on the shores of Bay of Bengal was built in 1639. As heard , it marks the formation of Chennai City . Inside is a museum displaying various cannons once used by the brave king Tipu Sultan, along with some age old artefacts. The flag pole at the roof is 150 ft high up in the sky and is said to be one of the tallest.

13. ST MARY CHURCH
Situated within Fort St . George , the tower like church of St Mary is also known as " Westminister Abbey of the east". It is the first Anglican Church in Asia and was built in 1680 ; it witnessed the tying of the nuptial knot of Robert Clive with Governor Elihu Yale, who was the pioneer of Yale Univesity . Today the church is taken care of by the Archaeological Survey of India. 

INDIA TAMIL NADU CHENNAI CITY

One of the biggest metropolitan cities in India, Chennai , earlier known as Madras, is acknowledged as the " Cultural Capital Of India". It is recognised for its unchanged age old traditions and rich heritage . the city had a humble beginning in 1639 when Francis Day and Andrew Cogan, agents of the erstwhile East India Company, obtained a piece of land from the ruler of Vijayanagar Empire. They named it Chennapatnam. Very soon, it rose to be a presidency town and after Independence, the capital of Tamil Nadu.

1. MUKTESWAR DANCE FESTIVAL ( JANUARY)
Renowned for its splendid arched gateway , Mukteswar Temple showcases one of the best instances of Odisha architecture. It is the venue for the Mukteswar Dance Festival, marvel at the classical dance Odissi in which performers charm spectators with their abhinaya, bhangi ,mudra, movements and colourful costumes.

2. RAJARANI MUSIC FESTIVAL ( JANUARY)
Organised in the courtyard of Rajarani Temple, the music festival celebrates the effusiveness of Indian classical music. Performances of renowned maestros fill the air with captivating music.

3. DHAULI KALINGA MAHOTSAV ( FEBRUARY)
A cultural extravaganza at Dhauli, the Mahotsav features folk art forms ( sambalpuri dance, Mayurbhanj Chhau, Bajasal, Ghanta Mridanga) , Kalsale dance music. Classical dance forms eg Kathak, Odissi, Bharatnatyam , manipuri, Kathakali etc.

4. EKAMRA UTSAV ( FEBRUARY)
Ekamra Utsav, a combination of many festivals , celebrates the unique and dynamic spirit of Bhubaneswar with a mix of both worlds, traditional and modern.It includes folk dance, food, handicraft exhibition and puppet shows from Ramayana and Mahabharata. The dancing styles of Paika Akhada, Danda Nritya , Chhau, Ghjumura, Ranpa, Ghoda Nach & Sambalpuri are performed.

5. MAHASHIVRATRI ( FEBRUARY)
It is celebrated at the biggest Shiva Temple, the Lingaraj Temple with great respect and devotion. The devotees start gathering near the temple much before sunrise and stand in queue for more than 5 hours for darshan. It is believed that one glimpse of Lord Shiva during this period ensures the person would not need to go through purgatory and will get a direct entry into heaven. The festival ends in the midnight, with Maha Deepa ritual wherein the idol of Lord Shiva is worshipped with a massive earthen deep or lamp.

6. DOL JATRA (MARCH)
The festival of colours is celebrated as Dol Jatra in Odisha . During the course of the procession, the idols of Lord Krishna and Devi Radha are stopped in front of every house for the devotees to worship.

7. ASHOKASHTAMI ( APRIL)
Observed on the eight day of the Oriya month of Chaitra , the Lingaraj yatra festival in Ashokashtami is one of the most popular festivals in Bhubaneswar. People gather near the Lingaraj temple to witness the Rath Yatra ( car festival) to Lord Shiva till Rameswara Temple.

8. DURGA PUJA ( SEPTEMBER -OCTOBER)
The festival of Goddess Durga is celebrated for 10 days. The victory of the goddess over demon Mahishasur. The Festival is celebrated with traditional rituals and great pom and show. In Bhubaneswar , Saheednagar Durga Puja Samiti is the oldest of all and it is sponsored and attended by the who's who f politics , film industry and sports field.

9. DEEPAVALI/ KALI PUJA ( OCTOBER -NOVEMBER)
In Bhunaneswar, Goddess Kali is worshipped during DIWALI. The black complexioned Kali stands with one foot on Lord Shiva's chest, a slaughtered head in one hand, khadga or scythe in another and wears a skull garland. The festival is celebrated all over the state with fore crackers and lamps.

10. MUHARRAM 
This festival is observed as a day of mourning by Muslims.It is observed on the 10th day of Islamic lunar month of Muharram, coinciding with the day of martyrdoms of Hazrat Hussain at the Battle of Karbala. Popular mostly among the Shia Muslims, processions bearing ornamented floats ( taziyas) are taken out on every major road in the city.

11. TOSHALI NATIONAL CRAFTS MELA ( DECEMBER)
The crafts mela, organised by Odisha Tourism Development Corporation is a 13 day event of Bhubaneswar. A large number of craftsmen , artists, painters , sculpltors ,etc converge from all over the country. It is an opportunity for visitors to meet them and purchase exclusive crafts; other than preservation , it helps in creating market for these crafts.


INDIA ODISHA BHUBANESWAR CITY - TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

1. RAM MANDIR
Ram Mandir is beautifully decorated with holy images of Rama , Lakshman and Sita. The temple in the heart of the city can be easily identified by its high spire. Idols of Lord Shiva and Hanuman , that are made out of marble enshrine the place.

2. INDIRA GANDHI PARK
Spread over an area of 10.6 acres the park is the place where the erstwhile Prime Minister of India Smt Indira Gandhi had delivered her last public speech on 30 October 1984, a day prior to her assassination in New Delhi. Once a famous parade ground, the prime attraction of this park is the statue of Indira Gandhi, a masterpiece of the Russian duo Dimitry Ryebachev and Alexander Ryebachev.

3. BDA CITY CENTRE
Located at the central part of the city, this park covers an area of over 25 acres. It has a kid's corner , a parking lot , water fountains jog tracks and the likes. It is owned and maintained by Bhubaneswar Development authority, which is also responsible for the upkeep of more than 50 parks and open spaces across the city

4. KALINGA STADIUM
The Kalinga Stadium is the biggest and the main stadium of Bhubaneswar . Presently converted into a sport complex, it has an 8 lane synthetic track, gymnasium hall, swimming pool and a 3 side gallery ,which can accommodate more than 55000 spectators.

5. LINGARAJ TEMPLE
This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and dates back more than 1000 years. Hovering at a height of 180 ft, the temple looks down on most of the skyscrapers below. It is located  within a spacious courtyard that is 520  ft long and 465 ft wide. Other than the main temple , there are around 150 smaller shrines within the complex.

Lingaraj meaning " king of the lingas" is dedicated to Lord shiva in his Tribhubaneshwara ( lord of the three worlds) manifestation. In addition to the deul ( sanctum - sanctorum) and the jagmohana ( porch) , the temple has the natamandira ( hall of dance) and the bhogamandapa (hall of offering)

6.RAJARANI TEMPLE
The 11th century temple is built with rare sandstones of red and gold shades. Most notable feature of this temple is the idols of Indra,Agni, Yama, Nairiti, Varuna, Vayu, Kubera and Ishana, guarding it from all directions. Temple exhibits yet another phase in the evolution of Odishan temple architecture.

7. BINDUSAGAR LAKE
According to myths, Lord Shiva made this lake in order to quench the thirst of Devi Parvati.
The lake is about 1300 ft in length and 700 ft in width. The banks of Bindusagar Lake are bound and paved with stone slabs which further enhance its charm. The idol of Lord Shiva from the Lingaraj Temple is given a bath as a ritual annually. The holy water of this lake is believed to have miraculous powers that can cure ailments. It is also believed that the water of this lake is holy and washes away all the sins and diseases, when taken a dip.

8. MUKTESWAR TEMPLE
Mukteswar is one of most prominent temples of Odisha, known for its exquisite architecture , Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the 10th century shrine has a huge well, whose water is believed to cure infertility. The " Jewel of Odissi Architecture", is a potpourri of Jain, Hindu and Buddhist architecture. The exquisite torana ( gateway) to the Mukteswara Temple, has elaborate sculptures that resemble attributes of female forms , monkeys and peacocks.

9. AVANTA VASUDEVA TEMPLE
The temple of Krishan , Balarama and subhadra was built by Chandrikadevi, daughter of Ananga- Bhumadev III un 1278 AD. Unlike other temples of that era, it has uniform sanctum, porch and 3 chambers namely Jagamohana, Natamandira and Bhogamandapa. Standing high on the banks of Bindusagar lake, it is visually  a smaller replica of the Lingaraj Temple.

10. PARSURAMESWAR TEMPLE
The 7th century temple is comparatively similar than others. It is known for its engravings that portray Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's wedding. The temple is also abode of Indra (god of rain), Surya (the Sun( and Yama ( god of death) along with the seven mother goddesses. The sculptures found here, all share a sense of elegance and dimensions rarely seen in other temples across the state.

11. EKAMRA KANAN
The botanical research and conservation centre houses a large lake , rose gardens, flower beds, lush lawns and numerous species of plants. A large number of birds migrate to the lake every year. A Cactus garden here, rare has an incredible collection of cacti rare trees and 9000 varieties of roses. A flower show is held here in December -January.

12. KHANDAGIRI & UDAYGIRI 
Khandagiri and Udaygiri, the identical hills are the most popular tourists sites in Bhubaneswar . Lying beside each other , Khandagiri has 15 rock cut caves while Udaygiri has 18. Most of the caves are of either Buddhist or Jain origins. Historians have determined that the excavation of the hillside started sometime around the 1st century BC and was carried on for centuries. The sculptures in these rock cut shrines are some of the best in India and provide an important understanding of the evolution of architecture in general and sculpture in particular in India.

13. PATHANI SAMANTA PLANETARIUM
The planetarium was constructed as a tribute to the great 19th century astronomer Pathani Samanta Chandrashekhar. Along with its regular night sky viewing, poster shows and audio visual programs, it also provides financial and academic support to young researchers. A public library equipped with books on science and technology is also within the planetarium's premises.

14. KEDAR GOURI TEMPLE
Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Kedareshwar manifestation ion and shrines of Lord Shiva). The ancient text , Kapila Samhita states that the stream that flows by the side of this temple has miraculous powers. Nearby are 2 lakes known as Marichi Kund and Khira Kund. The waters of Marichi Kund is said to be good for digestion and Khira Kund 's water is sold in auction to women who cannot conceive.

15. VAITAL TEMPLE
The 8th century Vaital Temple is known for its semi cylindrical roof and the gopuram (spire) in Dravidian style. Chamuda is the presiding deity in this temple which is why one of the oldest and regular customs here is animal sacrifice. It is also a major pilgrimage spot for tantriks.

16. DHAULIGIRI HILL
Dhauligiri Hill is one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimages in Odisha. Emperor Ashoka retired from the violence of war and embraces Buddhism from this place. Apart fromthe edicts of Ashoka, one can visit the Shanti Stupa, Saddharma Vihar Monastery , ancient sculpture , rock out caves and numerous small Hindu temples.


INDIA ODISHA BHUBANESWAR CITY

Bhubaneswar owes its name to the incarnation of Lord Shiva, known as Tribhubaneswara or the " Lord of Three Worlds". The city was the capital of ancient kingdom of Kalinga, which was captured by Emperor Ashoka in 261 , only . Believed to have housed more than 7000 temples in the past, only 500 are now extant. Though the city is accelerating towards  commercial modernization, it has still managed to retain its ancient heritage.

The celebration of Goddess Durga's victory on buffalo demon king Mahisasura is one of the biggest festivals in West Bengal. The city of Kolkata lighten s up like a diamond during night as people crowd up the roads and gather in pandals.

5. KALI PUJA ( OCTOBER - NOVEMBER)
The festival of Goddess Kali is celebrated during Diwali. Special puja is held in Kalighat and Dakshineswar Temple where the ritual of animal sacrifice takes place. The occasion is marked with decoration of lamps , candles and a lot of crackers.

6. BHAI PHOTO ( OCTOBER - NOVEMBER )
Bhai Phota is an occasion where a sister puts sandal mark or tika on her brother's forehead and prays for his long life. The brother in return promises to protect her throughout his life.

7. CHRISTMAS ( DECEMBER)
Christmas is celebrated in Kolkata with the same spirit as other festivals. The day begins with carols and prayers. Park Street , the main hub celebrations is lighted with twinkling bulbs and draped with decorative papers.

8. MUHARRAM 
The day of  martydom of prophet Mohammed's grandson Imam Hussain is observed all over India with a  mournful modality. In Kolkata huge rallies can be seen from Rajabazar, Kidderpore and Sealdah which meet at Beliaghata.

 

INDIA KOLKATA- TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

1. ARCHARYA JAGADISH CHANDRA BOSE INDIAN BOTANIC GARDEN
Considered the largest and oldest in South East Asia, it was previously known as " Company Baggaan" or Company's Garden. Built in 1787, the garden was a brain child of Lieutenant Colonel Robert Kyd. Sprawling across 273 acres, it is home to over 12000 trees and shrubs which are of about 1400 species. The prime attraction of the garden is the 200 year old banyan tree, one of the largest in the world.

2. DAKSHINESWAR KALI TEMPLE
The Dalshineswar Kali Temple  on the eastern riverbank of Hooghly dates back to 1847-1855 . The shrine was constructed by Rani Rashmoni, on the site that was once a penance ground for Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Just 3 km from here, one can visit the famous Belur Math, the monastery of Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. A boat ride to this temple is not to be missed.

3. EDEN GARDEN
The beautiful landscaped garden was dedicated and nominated after Mrs Eden, sister of former Governor General Lord Auckland. Nearby is the Eden Garden Stadium , one of the oldest and biggest cricket stadiums in the world. Famous as Lord's of Asia, the stadium, built in 1864 hosts many national & international matches.

4. KOLKATA MAIDAN
A heaven for sport lovers, the picturesque field on west Choweinghee Road serves as a big relief for the busy Kolkatans. Whether a foodie, a football player, a jogger or a cricket fanatic, the 400 hectare green Maidan is every localite's essential destination. From here, one can also get a glimpse of Fort William, Victoria Memorial and the Shaheed Minar.

5. BELUR MATH
Belur math, a magnificent temple was founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1899, it is the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission, situated on the west bank of Hoogly River. This glorious edifice resembles a mosque, church and temple. Ramakrishna philosophy is based on the unity of all faiths.

6. HOWEAH BRIDGE
Also known as  Rrabindra Setu, the Howrah Bridge on Hooghly River serve a regular passage to lakhs of vehicles and pedestrian. The cantilevered eight lane truss bridge was built in 1943 for the purpose to connect Kolkata and Howrah.

7. VICTORIA MEMORIAL HALL
One of the eminent and most visited monuments in Kolkata , the Victoria Memorial , dedicated to Queen Victoria , is 184 ft tall and is sprawled over an area of 64 acres. The memorial was later converted to a museum which provides a gallery to British period paintings , sculptures, maps , coins, stamps, textiles etc.The garden outside the building is a perfect place to hang around in the evenings.

8. SHAHEED MINAR
Known as " Octerloney Monument" , during the British era ,the beautiful white pillar was dedicate to Sir David  Ochterlony's triumph during the Nepal  in 1814-1816. Later , renamed as Shadeed Minar in 1969 , it honoured the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for Independence.

9. KALIGHAT TEMPLE
The two century old  Kalighat is one of  the 51 shaktipeeths of India. Legend has  it that Goddess Sati's right toes fell here during the Mahatandava of Lord Siva. The temple finds a mention in Mansar Bhasan composed sometime in the 15th century. Near the temple is Nirmal Hriday - home for sick, dying and destitute, run by the Missionaries of Charity, once headed by Mother Teresa.

10. MARBLE PALACE
The neo classical 19th century marble mansion, takes one back to the traditional Bengali. Structured with tall Corinthian columns, balconies and inclined roofs, its pavilions show similarities with Chinese architecture. The 3 storied edifice houses a thakur dalan ( family temple) near the patio, a restaurant , a rock garden , a lake and a small zoo.

11. RABINDRA SADAN
Whether dance, drama , art poetry or literature, everything finds a platform in Rabindra Sadan. Named after the nobel laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore, the complex was established in 1967. Inside  the complex is Rabindan Sadan theatre- Nandan, Bangla Academy and Gaganendra Prodorshonshala. Apart from plays, dramas and stage shows , many film festivals are also organised here.

12. RABINDRA SAROVAR
Once called as Dhakuria Lake, the Rabindra Sarovar is an artificial water body which serves as a perfect picnic spot. Apart from the migratory birds, one can also visit the Rabindra Sarovar Football Stadium, Mukta Mancha - open air theatre and the Japanese Buddha Temple.

13. JAIN TEMPLE
In the north  east of the city, stands a cluster of 4 jain temples. The main one, Prareshnath temple, is dedicated to Sri Sital Nathji , 10th of 24 path founders ( Tirthankars). It was built in 1867.

14. NAKHODA MASJID
One of the renowned mosque of Kolkata , Nakhoda Masjid was built in 1926 by Abdar Rahim Osman. Its architecture resembles the monuments of Fatehpur Sikri. The colossal prayer hall can provide room for more than 10000 namazis at one time.

15. VIDYASAGAR SETU
Popular as second Hoogly Bridge , the suspension bridge was constructed in 1992. Constructed in 1992. Constructed over 22 years on an estimated cost of 3.88 billion rupees, the bridge provides passage to more than 85000 vehicles every day.

16. JORASANKO THAKURBARI
The brick red mansion of Jorasanko ' Thakurbari" was once the residence of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It was turned into a museum by Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1961. Special celebrations take place on the poet's birthday on the 25th day of Bengali month of Baisakh.

17. ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN 
This zoo was a brainchild of L Schwendier,a member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. Built in 1875, the zoological garden has been a source of education, amusement and pleasure for the people of Kolkata and tourists who visit from all over the world.

18. MOTHER'S WAX MUSEUM KOLKATA
The country's first wax museum was set up in the satellite township  of Rajarhat New Town in Kolkata which has 19 statues of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and film star Amitabh Bachchan. It features life like wax figures of icons and celebrities.

19. PARK STREET CEMETERY
The Park Street Cemetery was one of the earliest non church cemeteries in the world and probably the largest Christian cemetery outside Europe and Amerika in the 19th century. Opened in 1767, the cemetery was in use until about 1830 and is now a heritage site , protected by the archaeological survey of India ( ASI) . It was opened to relieve the pressure on the old burial ground in the heart of the city . The road leading to the cemetery came to be known as the Burial Ground Road but was subsequently renamed Park Street after the park around Vansittart's garden house. By 1785, the burial ground had been extended on the northern side of Park Street and by 1840 a vast new cemetery was opened to the east of the Lower Circular Road. The Europeans started to disuse it in 1790. It has been confirmed by a marble plaque which reads " south Park Street".

20. BIRLA MANDIR
The Birla Mandir was built by the " Birla Family", the famous industrialist family in India. Its construction began in 1970 and took 26 years to complete the indelible structure. Inaugurated on 21st of February, 1996 by Dr Karan Singh, the Pran Prathistha ceremony of the idols was done by Swami Chidananda Maharaj. It is dedicated to the consortium of Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha.

21. FLOWER MARKET
Mullick Ghat Flower Market near the southeast end of Howrah Bridge is fascinatingly  colourful virtually 24 hours a day. Many workers live in makeshift shacks, bathing in the river, while at around 7 am local wrestlers practice their art on a small caged area of sand set just back from the river.

22. ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL
This Episcopal cathedral church was sponsored by Bishop Wilson and built in 1880 by Sir Edward Burne -Jones. Following an Anglican style of worship , the church is well known for its stained glass panels, carved benches and murals on wall. The meditation hall in the churchyard is a gift of peace from the dignitaries of Shantunuketan.

23. WRITERS' BUILDING
The huge red building on BBD Bagh also known as " Mahakaran "or the Secretariat , houses the office of the Chief Minister and more than 6000 administrative officers.

24. GURUSADAY MUSEUM
The Gurusaday Museum is a folk arts and crafts museum . The collection, with over 3000 artifacts include archaeological objects, deities, manuscripts , masks , musical instruments , paintings , textiles and woodwork.

25. VIVEKANANDA HOUSE
Ramakrishna Mission Swami Viveananda's Ancestral House and Cultural Centre is a museum and cultural centre, It is located at 3, Gourmohan Mukherjee Street , Beadon Street , Kolkata.
In this house, Swami Vivekananda ( then called Narendranath Datta) was born on 12 January 1863. It remained Vivekananda's home throughout his childhood and early youth. The cultural centre was inaugurated by the President of India A P.J Abdul Kalam.

26. TOWN HALL
Kolkata Town Hall in Roman Doric style, was built in 1813 by the architect and engineer Maj -Gen John Garstin ( 1756- 1820) with a fund of 700000 Rupees raised from a lottery to provide the Europeans with a place for social gatherings. The public could visit the ground floor hall to see statues and large size portrait paintings but they were not allowed access to the upper storey . Applications for the use of the upper storey were required to be made . In 1867, the Town Hall came under the custody of the Calcutta Municipality ( later the Kolkata Municipal Corporation) .In 1897, indiscriminate interference with the structure inevitably took its toll, but was stopped in 1998 by timely intervention.

INDIA KOLKATA CITY

Kolkata has many names; all these names capture only one side of this multifaceted city which has enthralled everyone, from a tourist to the resident. It was established in 1690 by Job Charnock , an agent of the British East India Company. He bought three villages, Gobindapur, Sutanati and Kalikata and combined them to build a city what was then known as " London of the East". It remained as the capital of British India till the year 1911.

Kolkata, as it is now known, is the capital of West Bengal and one of the largest cities in India. It is where the past meets the future, where the suit meets the dhoti and where tradition meets change!

INDIA VARANASI -FESTIVALS

1. FEBRUARY - DHRUPAD MELA
Dhrupad Mela is a 5 days North Indian classical music extravaganza. Legendary artists perform throughout the night, enlivening the Tulsi Ghat with sounds of an assortment of Indian musical instruments; it culminates when the sun comes up on Ganga.

2.( FEBRUARY - MARCH )MAHASHIVARATRI
The city of Lord Shiva celebrates Mahashivaratri festival with great fervour. On this occasion, all Shiva temples of Varanasi are ornamentally embellished. The enactment of Lord Shiva's marriage sees the baraar or " marriage procession " being taken out from the Mahamrityunjaya Temple, Daranagar and concluding at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

The festival of colours in Benaras is celebrated with a great spiritual and traditional fervour. The idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati are taken out in procession from Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the devotees flock on the roadside throw gulal ( dry coloured powder ) on them.

4. (MARCH - APRIL)  HANUMAN JAYANTI 
Devotees celebrate and rejoice at Sankat Mochan Temple on the occasion of Lord Hanuman's birth. The janmotsav or " birthday' is celebrated

5. (JUNE)  GANGA DUSSEHRA
Ganga Dussehra, the biggest festival dedicated to goddess Ganga, is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the city. Numerous devotees take a holy dip in the Ganga and make offerings to the goddess.

6.( OCTOBER - NOVEMBER ) - GANGA MAHOTSAV
The festival is organised by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department to celebrate Dev Deepavali and also provide a platform to display the cultural legacy of the city. Reputed artistes are invited from across the country to perform and participate in the official celebrations of the 3 day festival on Ravidas Ghat.

7. (NOVEMBER)  DEV DEEPAVALI
The ghats of Varanasi brighten up with several glittering diyas  ,"earthen lamps" , during the Dev Deepavali. Devotees pay homage to River Ganga during the full moon in the month of Kartik called Kartik Purnima.

8. (OCTOBER) NAKKATAYYA LEELA 
An incident from the great epic, Ramayana, Nakkatayya is reenacted in the Nakkatayya Leela at Chetganj. Although it is more popular among the people of Varanasi and the neighbouring towns, it is also recommended to those exploring the heritage of India.

9. ( NOVEMBER - DECEMBER )  NAG NATHAIYA 
Nag Nathaiya Festival is a unique and popular festival celebrated on the Tulsi Ghat. It marks the famous episode of Kaliya Mardan from Krishna Leela, where Lord Krishna leapt into the water and killed the poisonous Kaliya Cobra (nag) to serve the people of Vrindavan. A huge celebration takes place where the same episode is enacted and applauded by large number devotees.




INDIA VARANASI - SHOPPER'S PARADISE

1. GODOWLIA MARKET
Godowlia Market is one of the most popular and busy shopping  areas in the city. An array of shops selling different items, from garments to bags, handicrafts to gift items make this market simple stand apart. Beautiful silk and zari sarees, salwar suits and other decorative household products are available here at reasonable prices.

2. CHOWK BAZAAR
The Chowk Bazaar has numerous shops exhibiting and selling elegant silk dresses. There are also book stores like Vishwavidyalaya Prakashan, Motilal Banarasidas and Chaukhambha Sanskrit Bhavan boasting of rare collections. It is also known for its flower market and as being a foodie's paradise. The famous Khoya Gali specialises in condensed milk sweets, while Kachori Gali has the famous Banarasi Kachori ( flour snack filled with stuffing) . For chaat ( curd based snack) lovers, Deena Chaat ( Deenanath Kesari) at Nariyal Gali is the place to be.

3. VISHWANATH GALI
Located in the middle of old Varanasi (Banaras ) City, Vishwanath Gali is a puzzle with three entry points. Apart from delicious vegetarian snacks, this is a perfect place for people who have a sweet tooth. Vishwanath Gali is a street shopper's delight with everything available from backpacks to audio cassettes. The beautifully adorned wood and lacquer sindoor case are a must pick from this market.
The saunf- supari, a mouth freshener offered after hot kachoris and delicious jalebis here is as refreshing as  the water of the Ganga.

4. THATHERI BAZAAR
Shop till you drop for silk sareers, suits , exquisite fabric materials , embroidered garments , pillow and cushion covers and other garments ,pillow and cushion covers and other garments switch over to the brass works and choose from the wide range and variety available here. Chew the famous Baarasi paan or betel leaf in Babu Nandan's paan shop which is one of the most eminent paan shop in Varanasi. Do avail some heavy discounts and of course be ready to raise your voice for barganing.

5. BANSPHATAK CHOWK
Popular as sari market, Bansphatak Chowk is famous for Banarasi sari shops. The best of lehenga-choli,gharga and other traditional dresses are found here. Don't forget to visit the state emporium for genuine Banarasi items. 

INDIA VARANASI - TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

1. THE GHATS OF VARANASI
Every holy activity begins with a cleaning bath on one of hundred of ghats lining the Ganga in Varanasi. It would be safe to say that the life of a Hindu centres on the Varanasi ghats.
When he is born , he is brought to the ghats for the blessings of the gods, he receives the janeo (holy thread) on its banks and when it is time for him to depart to the other world, his mortals remains are cremated on its banks. No journey to Varanasi is, hence , complete without a visit to the ghats.

2. ASSI GHAT
Legend has it that Assi Ghat is located exactly on the spot where Goddess Durga threw her dagger after slaying the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. The impact was so great that a crater was formed and a stream emerged that merged with the Ganga.

3. HARISHCHA GHAT 
Legend has it that Assi Ghat can be easily identified by the pyres that burn all day long on its stone steps. It is believed that the legendary King Harishchandra worked here. One can , also visit the temples of Adi Manikanteshwara, Vriddha Kedar and Raja Harishchandra located on the ghat.

4. HANUMAN GHAT
The foremost feature of the Hanuman Ghat are the numerous akhadas( country gymnasiums) lining its steps. Every morning, heavily built men wielding clubs can be spotted exercising on its earthen floors. It is also the best place to lie down on a charpai ( string cot) and have a pehelwan ( wrestler) give you nice and refreshing oil massage)

5. DASASHWAMEDH GHAT
One of the most important ghats in Varanasi, Dasaswamedh derives its name from the ten (dus, in Hindi) horse sacrifices( ashwamedh) performed here by Lord Brahma to appease Lord Shiva.One of primary attractions is the Ganga aarati. Every evening, priests come down to the ghats and worship the Ganga with multi tiered flaming lamps. Viewed from a boat on the river, it is a visual spectacle,

6. MANIKARNIKA GHAT
The chief cremation ghat of Varanasi, Manikarnika Ghat has numerous pyres burning day and night.It is believed that Lord Shiva himself goes near the burning pyre and carries the soul to heaven. Fuelled by this belief, the ghat received hundreds of bodies every day.

7. KASHI VISHWANATH TEMPLE
One of the most popular and revered shrines of Varanasi is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple . It is one of the twelve sacred jyotirlingas of this famed lingas can sanctify one's entire being. In the same complex is the temple of Devi Annapurna Bhavani.

8. GYANVAPI MOSQUE
Sharing the same complex of Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the triple domed Mughal style mosque was built by Emperor Aurangzeb. The mosque and the Kashi Vishwanath Temple stand testimony to the diversity of India.

9. JANTAR MANTAR
Established by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1737, this observatory is similar to the one in Delhi and Jaipur. It measures local time, sun's declination, altitude , movement of stars, planets and determines eclipses with the help of yantras or mechanical instruments. Some of the important yantras  are the Krantivritta Yantra, Digansha Yantra, Samrat Yantra, Prakash Yantra, Ram Yantra , Disha Yantra and Dhruva Yantra.

10. GURUDWARA BARI SANGAT SRI GURU TEGH BAHADUR
The earliest and most significant gurudwara at Varanasi is located at the very site where Guru Tegh Bahadur is said to have stayed during his visit. It is 3 storeyed building that houses a sanctum, 2 shrines and a small room called Tap Asthan which is believed to be the chamber that Guru Tegh Bahadur used for medication. The complex also has a narrow step well, called Baoli Ganga Pargat.

11. MRITYUNJAY MAHADEV TEMPLE
The name of this holy temple is derived from the legend that the linga enshrined in its sanctum has the powers to conquer death ( mrityu in Hindi means " death " and jay means " victory" ). The waters of the well called Kalodak koop inside the complex is believed to have healing properties.

12. ALAMGIR MOSQUE
The beautiful 17th century Alamgir Mosque, built by Emperor Aurangzeb , is the largest structure on Panchganga Ghat.

13. ST MAY'S CHURCH
St Mary's is among the oldest Protestant churches in the country. It is believed that the foundation stone of this church was laid by Daniel Corrie in 1810. The compound with a short tower, spire and projecting porch also serve as the resting place to many tombs and memorials.

14. BHARAT MATA TEMPLE
Pay your obeisance to the map of undivided India, carved on marble and guarded by five pillars , each one symbolising the sky. Unlike other temples of India, Mother India is worshipped in the Bharat Mata Temple. Established by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt, the temple had Mahatma Gandhi as it first visitors in 1936.

15. DURGA TEMPLE
The 18th century temple , placed on the rectangular Durga Kund, can be easily identified by its huge multi tiered red shikhara. Built by a Bengali Queen, the goddess is worshipped with fervour especially during the Navratras.

16. BHARAT KALA BHAVAN
A part of Banaras Hindu University , this museum treasures Hindu and Buddhist archaeological remains. Established  in 1920, the hall has the sculpture of a man on one leg, one hand on his hip and the other handling a huge stone on his head, The museum houses other galleries like Nicholas Roerich Gallery, Chhavi (painting ) Gallery,Mahamana Malviy Gallerym Decorative Art Gallery and many others.

17. SANKAT MOCHAN HANUMAN TEMPLE
Founded by Goswami Tulsidas, the holy Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is believed to grant the wishes and desires of those in distress. According to Vedic Astrology, Lord Hanuman rescues people from the malignant forces of planet Saturn. The famous Prataha Aarti ( morning puja with hymns) at 5 am every day must be attended by one and all.

18. NEW VISHWANATH TEMPLE
Situated within the Banaras Hindi University grounds, the Shiva temple was planned by Madan Mohan Malviya and built by the famous Birla family. The Bhagavad Gita on the walls and shivalinga are the main attraction of this temple.

19. BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY
One of the internationally accredited institutions, the Banaras Hindu University or BHU, was founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in 1916 with De Annie Besant playing a crucial role. Known as " Oxford of the East", it is spread over 1300 acres on the south of the city. The architecture of the university considered amongst the marvelous monuments in Varanasi and also houses an airstrip for aeronautical education.


INDIA VARANRASI

VARANASI is counted among the cities that have been inhabited since ancient times. Popularly known as Kashi, the city is spiritually as vast as the Ganga herself and hence is called the religious capital of India. Also ,Kashi is mentioned in Puranas along with Ramayana, Mahabharat and Jatak.

It is also said that when Shiva , the god of destruction lets loose the PRALAYA ( the flood that will destroy all creation) , Kashi will remain unscathed. It is truly an eternal city.
