Bhubaneswar owes its name to the incarnation of Lord Shiva, known as Tribhubaneswara or the " Lord of Three Worlds". The city was the capital of ancient kingdom of Kalinga, which was captured by Emperor Ashoka in 261 , only . Believed to have housed more than 7000 temples in the past, only 500 are now extant.
