After a few gusty Malayalam and Tamil directors found commercial and critical success for films they dared to shoot here, this title town became a famous film shooting spot in the South Indian film Industry. Shortly Bollywood too jumped into the fray with the " John Abraham - Bispasha Basu starer " Jism " being shot here, as well as " Talaash" ( of Aamir Khan Fame) more recently. However Pondy was thrust into limelight internationally following the runaway success of Oscar - Winner " Life of Pi" directed by Mr Ang Lee who said , " While we were working on the script i scouted and there is really nothing else that compares to French India. It's unique and somewhat unfamiliar to the rest of the world. It's like you can just drop a camera anywhere there, turn it on and the picture will be beautiful." Chinese and Taiwanese tour operators have already been making inquiries about this former French enclave that sometimes appears to be stuck in a time warp. So why exactly is the city being increasingly sought after by film makers?
For one, the town resembles a dreamlike ready made set. No need to manufacture and recreate majestic french colonial villas, cobbled pathways, whimsical orange street lights and spacious boulevards lined with bougainvilleas. All of these are already there for the taking! Equally important is the fact that permissions are relatively easy to come by as government officials who no doubt view film making as a visiting card to showcase the town in its entire touristy splendor.
