Kolkata has many names; all these names capture only one side of this multifaceted city which has enthralled everyone, from a tourist to the resident. It was established in 1690 by Job Charnock , an agent of the British East India Company. He bought three villages, Gobindapur, Sutanati and Kalikata and combined them to build a city what was then known as " London of the East". It remained as the capital of British India till the year 1911.
