Take a birding trip to the tanks of Avaniyapuram in the outskirts of the city. Madurai is home to a number of resident and winter migratory birds. In the migratory season, one may witness roosting of Open Bill Storks at the Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary, Tirupathur/

Madurai is the seat of Tamil learning and culture and boasts of a World Tamil Sangam. Visit the Sangam Art Gallery to understand the cultural ethos of Tamils and go around the Sangam building to find the 1330 kurals ( couplets) of the Tirukkural, the second most translated literary work in the world, next only to Holy Bible.
6. GANDHI MEMORIAL MUSEUM
Visit the Gandhi Memorial Museum and have a date with the Mahatma. The first of all the six Gandhi museums in the country, the Madurai museum houses some of the original/ replicas of items used and worn of the Mahatma.
