1. MUKTESWAR DANCE FESTIVAL ( JANUARY)
Renowned for its splendid arched gateway , Mukteswar Temple showcases one of the best instances of Odisha architecture. It is the venue for the Mukteswar Dance Festival, marvel at the classical dance Odissi in which performers charm spectators with their abhinaya, bhangi ,mudra, movements and colourful costumes.
2. RAJARANI MUSIC FESTIVAL ( JANUARY)
Organised in the courtyard of Rajarani Temple, the music festival celebrates the effusiveness of Indian classical music. Performances of renowned maestros fill the air with captivating music.
3. DHAULI KALINGA MAHOTSAV ( FEBRUARY)
A cultural extravaganza at Dhauli, the Mahotsav features folk art forms ( sambalpuri dance, Mayurbhanj Chhau, Bajasal, Ghanta Mridanga) , Kalsale dance music. Classical dance forms eg Kathak, Odissi, Bharatnatyam , manipuri, Kathakali etc.
4. EKAMRA UTSAV ( FEBRUARY)
Ekamra Utsav, a combination of many festivals , celebrates the unique and dynamic spirit of Bhubaneswar with a mix of both worlds, traditional and modern.It includes folk dance, food, handicraft exhibition and puppet shows from Ramayana and Mahabharata. The dancing styles of Paika Akhada, Danda Nritya , Chhau, Ghjumura, Ranpa, Ghoda Nach & Sambalpuri are performed.
5. MAHASHIVRATRI ( FEBRUARY)
It is celebrated at the biggest Shiva Temple, the Lingaraj Temple with great respect and devotion. The devotees start gathering near the temple much before sunrise and stand in queue for more than 5 hours for darshan. It is believed that one glimpse of Lord Shiva during this period ensures the person would not need to go through purgatory and will get a direct entry into heaven. The festival ends in the midnight, with Maha Deepa ritual wherein the idol of Lord Shiva is worshipped with a massive earthen deep or lamp.
6. DOL JATRA (MARCH)
The festival of colours is celebrated as Dol Jatra in Odisha . During the course of the procession, the idols of Lord Krishna and Devi Radha are stopped in front of every house for the devotees to worship.
7. ASHOKASHTAMI ( APRIL)
Observed on the eight day of the Oriya month of Chaitra , the Lingaraj yatra festival in Ashokashtami is one of the most popular festivals in Bhubaneswar. People gather near the Lingaraj temple to witness the Rath Yatra ( car festival) to Lord Shiva till Rameswara Temple.
8. DURGA PUJA ( SEPTEMBER -OCTOBER)
The festival of Goddess Durga is celebrated for 10 days. The victory of the goddess over demon Mahishasur. The Festival is celebrated with traditional rituals and great pom and show. In Bhubaneswar , Saheednagar Durga Puja Samiti is the oldest of all and it is sponsored and attended by the who's who f politics , film industry and sports field.
9. DEEPAVALI/ KALI PUJA ( OCTOBER -NOVEMBER)
In Bhunaneswar, Goddess Kali is worshipped during DIWALI. The black complexioned Kali stands with one foot on Lord Shiva's chest, a slaughtered head in one hand, khadga or scythe in another and wears a skull garland. The festival is celebrated all over the state with fore crackers and lamps.
10. MUHARRAM
This festival is observed as a day of mourning by Muslims.It is observed on the 10th day of Islamic lunar month of Muharram, coinciding with the day of martyrdoms of Hazrat Hussain at the Battle of Karbala. Popular mostly among the Shia Muslims, processions bearing ornamented floats ( taziyas) are taken out on every major road in the city.
11. TOSHALI NATIONAL CRAFTS MELA ( DECEMBER)
The crafts mela, organised by Odisha Tourism Development Corporation is a 13 day event of Bhubaneswar. A large number of craftsmen , artists, painters , sculpltors ,etc converge from all over the country. It is an opportunity for visitors to meet them and purchase exclusive crafts; other than preservation , it helps in creating market for these crafts.
