ODISHA enjoys a tropical climate.
Its climate is influenced by the south-west monsoon.
The people of ODISHA are endowed
with rich culture and high tradition. Geographically and sociologically ODISHA
is like a melting pot where various cultures and traditions have mingled and
yet people of ODISHA have withstood all these pressure and made
their own culture and tradition continually enriching and flourishing through
the ages.
Among the states of India, ODISHA is
the ninth in area and eleventh in population with the latter figure standing at
4, 19, and 74,218 according to the 2011 Census. While covering 4.7 percent of
the country's total area, it account for 3.5 percent of the total population.
ODIA, one of the oldest languages
in the country is the predominant language spoken in the state and its outlying
tracts. ODIA is the official language of the state and 84 percent of the people
speak in ODIA.
People in ODISHA , whether rural or
urban, live in families. Those who have to stay away from family at their
places of work in towns or industrial areas usually come to spend their
holidays in their village homes. Marriage is usually monogamous among all the
sects. When a young man or woman is of marriageable age, it is usually the
duty of the parents to arrange their marriage .The Muslims and the Christian
follow their own traditional customs. Inter -caste marriage are taking place in
recent times, but are limited in number. Certain moral code and ethics are
commonly accepted in the ODISHAN society in respect of social product.
ODISHA is primarily any agrarian
economy having nearly 30% contribution to the Net Sate Domestic product (NSDP)
with 73% of the work force engage in this sector. The cropped area is
about 87.46 lakh hectares out of which only about 18.79 lakh hectares are
irrigated. Paddy is the major crop of the state. The state contributes about
1/10 of the rice produced
in India. Other crops
produced in the State are oil seeds, sugar cane, tobacco, jute and cotton.
ODISHA has an abundance of mineral
water wealth especially of good quality manganese ore, iron ore, chromite, bauxite,
limestone, titanium and graphite which are among the best in India. The total
production of minerals in the State is to the tune of about 5% of the country's
mineral production. ODISHA produces about 33% of the total iron ore produced in
India.
