Tollygunge Club was founded in 1895 by a Scottish banker, William Dixon Cruickshank , to provide Britishers facilities for games , sports and pastimes in Kolkata. Today, it boasts of a range of facilities , rarely found under a single roof; from sporting facilities - golf, tennis squash , billiards , swimming , riding and amateur equestrian sports -to luxurious accommodation, restaurants, in house entertainment , as well as well equipped gym , library ,cyber cafe , unisex salon and a herbal ayurvedic centre.
Great care has been taken to lay out the club grounds with both exotic and indigenous plants , some rare enough to be found in a botanical garden , to the effect that tollygunge Club has the distinction of being the only country club of its kind in India and is ranked among the top 20 clubs of the world. In this and other respect,"Tolly " as it is affectionately referred , has few equals in India and indeed in the world.
