The Madras Gymkhana Golf Course is a 6690 yard , par 72 course set whthin a horse race track. Known for its windy corridor and tricky roughs, it is part of the Madras Gymkhana Club at island Grounds , Anna Salai.
The Madras Golf Club was established in 1877, after Royal Calcutta Golf Club and the Bangalore Golf Club , were set up. The Golf Course was originally laid out at the Island Grounds in Annasalai, before it was shifted to Guindy in the 1880's. The golf course now referred to as Golf Course Annexe was originally 9 hole and became a 18 hole much later.
Originally played off the browns, the greens came about only in the 1880's.
Col Ross Thompson was the first Captain of this Golf Club and in the year 1878, the first inter club competition between Madras Gymkhana Club and Bangalore Golf Club teed off. This remains to date the world's oldest such continuing competition between two golf club celebrated 125 years of golf, a feat very few golf clubs outside Great Britain can boast of.
