Built in 1933 by Lord Willingdon , the Governor of Bombay presidency , this was the first club in India to grant entry to both Indians and Europeans . The story goes that the Governor was once denied access to Bombay Gymkhana Club as he was accompanied by an Indian Maharaja. Annoyed and offended by this , the feisty Lord Willingdon Sports initiated the building of the Willingdon sports Club.
Originally a 15 hole course, it was renovated and upgraded to an 18 hole course in 2011. although it has a relatively small fairway, the golf course here has 52 bunkers and 4 water bodies and this coupled with the sea breeze, makes for a fairly difficult course to par on.
The club house , which is built like a British summer bungalow with a sloping red tiled roof and long , white colonnades also has 6 tennis courts , a swimming pool , badminton ,squash court and a well equipped gym. Located in the heart of the city , at a walking distance from the Haji Alo dargah and about 2kms from Mahalaxmi Racecourse, with skyscrapers glinting in the background, this club is an ideal oasis for sports enthusiasts.
