Indonesia - Did you know Jakarta?

Jakarta as the capital city of Indonesia and serves as one of the main entrance gates for visitors to the country.

There are more than 50 museums housing variety of crafts and historical artefacts from throughout the country. Jakarta during the Dutch colonial era used to be referred to as Batavia.

The indigenous people of Jakarta are the Betawi ethnic group .

Jakarta serves as the capital city of Indonesia.

One of the typical dishes of the Betawi people is Kerak Telor.

One of the icons of the metropolitan city is the National Monument or more popularly known as Tugu Monas. The 132 meter high monument is decked with a gold leaf covered flame on top. Build in 1961 during the reign of the first president of Indonesia , Soekarno, the monument is encircled by a shady city of park where you can see people sit around at sunset and in the evening , and enjoy the day particularly during holidays or weekends. The base of the monument houses a series of diorama that depict the independence struggle of the Indonesians. A lift may also take you to the viewing area at the top part of the monument where you could have a bird eye view of the capital city dominated by skyscrapers.

It is only one of the many attractions of Jakarta. Jakarta which used to be called Batavia during the Dutch colonial period  preserves many historical relics. One of them is the Old city Tour area. Some
of the old buildings in the area are used as museums, including the Jakarta Historical Museum ( Museum Fatahillah) and the Puppet Show Museum ( Museum Wayang). An old building across the Historical Building is presently used as cafe that retains the original architecture.

Within the old city area you can also drop by Sunda Kelapa harbor that displays numerous local traditional boats that includes the renowned Phinisi. You could also visit the nearby Maritime Museum that houses the Indonesian Maritime Museum that houses the Indonesian maritime history as well as Dutch colonial heritage. Alternatively , strolling along the shipyard location of the former Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) and other formerly VOC- owned construction at the southern part of the harbor would be an impressive experience. Included in other museums worth visiting is the National Museum or also known as Museum Gajah located at the heart of the city, which houses the most complete collection of relics that represent the Indonesian history and culture.

If you do not have the luxury of the time to acquaint yourself with the whole Indonesian culture, you could visit Taman Mini Indonesia  Indah ,a cultural park where you could visit various Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a cultural park where you could see various samples of the arts and cultures of all the provinces of the Indonesia archipelago, each of which is represented by the respective traditional abode .

Taman Impian Jaya Ancol is a modern theme park considered as an icon of tourism in Jakarta. In this park , you could enjoy colorful selections of entertainment. The Phantasy World offers variety of high technology games. The Sea World houses a wealth of enchanting sea biota collection comprising around 126 species of fish , 5 species of reptile and 26 species of sea biota, 13 species of vertebrata and 1 species of mammal. For you who love marine travel , you could take  a cruise ashore to Thousand Islands. The cluster of small islands off the coast of Jakarta offers seaside beauty that fits the need for swimming , snorkeling and diving.
