Portugal - Castle of Belmonte

with an irregular oval layout, the castle of Belmonte is one of the most emblematic monuments of the village; its foundation due to D.Afonso III whom in 1258 authorizes the Bishop D. Egas Fafes to build a Tower in Belmonte.

After defining the frontiers with the Treaty of Alcanices, the castle of Belmonte in a second line of Defense, loses its military function, reason why, in 1446, D. Afonso V donate the castle to Fernao Cabral I to become his residence.

On the west curtain wall one can observe panoramic windows and a Manueline style window( attributed to Joao Fernandes Cabral), which attest to the passage of the castle to place of residence of the Cabrais.

in the late 17th century , a violent fire consumed the west wing of the Palace, as has been found archaeologically . This circumstances was crucial to the process of abandonment of the site.
