The Templar Castle and the Covent of Christ form a unique monumental ensemble in the genre. It was the seat of the order of the Temple until 1314 and the seat of the Order of Christ from 1357 onward. Within the original castle , which began to be built in 1160, is the octagonal church from the end of the 12th century, a Romanesquare shrine off oriental influence.
The beginning of the construction of the Convent is due to the Infante D. Henrique. Within the Templar walls he raised his residence and added the cloisters of the Wash and of the Cemetery. in this monumental complex, there are also 6 other cloisters. This enables us to view this monument as a record of the history of architecture in Portugal. : the templar church of the Castle from the 12th/13th centuries is Romansque . Having been the Oratory of the Order of the Templars, it is a compact cylindrical structure of eastern influence . The cloisters of the time of the Infante D. Henrique appear in the Gothic style. the exuberant " Window of the Chapterhouse" from the early 16th century symbolizing the tree of Jesse, displays the Manueline style and has become an icon of the Portuguese heritage .
During this period, the works on the Convent are full of allusions to the Discoveries and History of Portugal. The construction period of King D Joao III up to the 18th century, displays the Renaissance style and Mannerism marks the cloister of the Inn. The main cloister is the most important and emblematic of the cloisters of the Convent of Christ. It is the highlight of the Renaissance architecture , by Diogo de Torralva, although completed by Philip Terzi. this ensemble , with an area of about 54000 m² (square metres), is the largest monumental area Portugal and one of the largest in the world. It was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1983.
