This Church , dedicated to Santa Maria, was the pantheon of the Order of the Temple since the 12th.
Some of the Templar masters are buried there, among them D. Gualdim Pais. The tombstone is on the wall of the second chapel, and was placed there when all the Templar tombs were removed by Friar Antonio de Lisboa, under the orders of King D. Joao III.
It is a Gothic Temple, a longitudinal plant composed of three large naves, and served as inspiration to other churches of the late Portuguese Gothic.
The Renaissance -style pulpit is not from the time of the original church, but from the middle of the 16th century. In the main chapel stands out the grandeur of the sixteenth -century Renaissance tomb of D. Diogo Pinheiro, the first bishop of Funchal, appointed by King D.Manuel I, although he never got to leave Tomar.
The construction of this tomb is attributed to Diogo Pires-o-moco, a famous sculptor of those times. Below the tomb is the tombstone of D.Gil Martins, the first master of the new Order of Christ and the only one to have his tombstone there.
The main chapel is from the 16th century and represents Our Lady of Milk.
The rosacea that is on the high altar, representing the sign of Solomon, is of recent origin, introduced during the great restoration of 1940.
In the exterior, the magnificent rosacea stands out, as well as the watchtower adapted to bell tower and the loggia of the 16th century. Above the portal is engraved one of earliest symbols of the Templars, the five pointed star, called the sign , or symbol of Solomon, for that was the emblem of that ancient Jewish King.
The Pantheon of the Templar Masters was the seat of a nullius dioceses with jurisdiction over all the Portuguese Churches of the Discoveries, through the papal bull of March 13, 1455.
