This hermitage was built on the slope leading to the convent of Christ between and 1572/73 in the purest style of the Renaissance. The construction begun under the guidance of Joao de Castilho and finished by Diogo de Torralva. The small basilica like church has 3 vaulted naves, Corinthian colonnades and was destined to be the funerary chapel of King D Joao III, something that never happened. It is one of the purest examples of the Renaissance in Europe, being the best evocation of Greco- Roman art in the Iberian Peninsula.
