After the donation of the territory by King Afonso Henriques in 1159, the Knights Templar began on march st 1160, following the orders of D. Gualdim Pais, the construction of the Castle and the magnificent Charola ( the round Templar Church) . On the opposite bank of river, and on the ruis of an old monastery, they built the See of the Order , which would become the Pantheon of the Templar Masters, the Church of Santa Maria do Olival.
Tomar was the seat of the Order of the Temple until its extinction by Pope Clement V.
In 1322, the members of the new Order of Christ are installed in Tomar, although the Order is based in Castro Marim.
In 1357, Tomar definitively assumes the role of Seat of the Order of Christ.
In 1789, queen Maria II secularized the Order of Christ , publishing new statues that transformed it into an Honorific Order, destined to reward military, political and civil services.
the Order of Christ currently maintains this honorific role, being his Grand Master the President of the Portuguese Republic .
