Portugal Tomar- Tradition / The feast of the Trays

According to researchers, the Feast of Trays  has a pre-national origin dating back to the time of Romans and to the evocation of the Goddess Ceres in the harvests  feasts , whether by the profusion of colors or by the presence of the bread and the ears of wheat.

later, from the XIV century onward, it will have been adapted as a feast evocative of the cult of the Holy Spirit, instituted by queen Santa Isabel.

Every 4 years, the feast is announced on Easter Sunday , with the Exit of the Crowns and Pendants of all the parishes of the county.This is repeated for 7 weeks , visiting the various streets of the city.

The feast itself, usually takes place at the beginning of July, with its high point in the Parade of the Trays. It's an immense stream of colours with several hundred pairs of men and women. the girls wear white , a symbol of purity , with a coloured ribbon crossing their cheat and carry on their heads the maximum symbol of the festivity: The Tray. The tray should have the height of the girl who carries it. It is garnished with paper flowers, vegetable motives and ears of wheat. It consists of 30 specially shaped loaves of 400 grams each , stuck in 5 or 6 reeds. The whole is topped by the Cross of Christ or the dove of the Holy Spirit. 

Closing the great procession come to the carts of bread, meat , wine that will be distributed on the last day of the feast to the neediest; it is the Peza, which represents the essence of the Holy Spirit cult -sharing with the community.
