Portugal was the first kingdom of Iberian Peninsula to establish the Order of the Temple.
In 1128, King Afonso Henriques became a member of the Order, and the Templars supported the new king in the conquest of the territory , fighting at his side innumerable battles. Kind Afonso henriques, like his mother, granted them numerous possessions and privileges. Among these is the donation of the territory of Ceras and a castle was erected in Tomar, which would be the headquarters of the Order until 1314. Aware of the relevant support that the Knights Templar had provided and continued to provide in the defense and settlement of the Portuguese territory , King Dinis did not condemn or persecute them at the time of the extinction of the Order by Pope Clement V. Fearing losing their property to the clergy, as had happens in other countries, Kind Dinis , aware that alone he wouldn't powerful enough, turns to Fernando IV , king of Castlile and through Convention of Salamanca, they agreed that if the Order of the Temple were suspended in their countries, all goods, revenues and possessions would revert to the crown. they also promised to support each other in the defense of these goods. The king of aragon joind this cause and the Pope respected the alliance. In Portugal, a new order was created , the Order of Christ, to which all the goods of the extinct Order of the Templars and some of their knights passed.
