Portugal Tomar- Chapel Of Santa Iria

Evocative of the legendary patron saint of Tomar, the chapel of Santa Iria is a  part of Convent with the same name, originally belonging to the Poor Clares sisters.
It has a rectangular plan, of a single nave , with a painted coffered ceiling and its walls are covered with 17th century "diamond- tip" tiles . It has a Manueline door that connects to the sacristy and contains an admirable Calvary of a light colour limestone and a profusely decorated tiles panel in the Main -Chapel, allusive to the symbols of the Holy Spirit.

The language of the Coimbra style Renaissance is enhances by the portico and the window in the style of Nicolau Chanterene. The altarpiece of Christ crucified is attributed to João de Ruã o. One of the most curious elements in the vicinity is the Arco das Freiras ( Nuns Arch) , an aerial passage between the Convent of Santa Iria and the old palace of Frei Antonio de.

Legend tells the story of Iria, a pious young girl that lived in the Visigoth era in the 7th century. her beauty enchanted Britaldo, a young man who fell in love with her, as well as friar Remigio, his preceptor, who gave her a drink that caused her belly to swell.
The alleged betrayal was not supported by Britaldo , who ordered her to be killed. her body was carried by the Nabão River down to Santarem. October 20 evokes the day of his death , with petals being thrown into the river in an evocation of the martyr's blood.
