The convent of S Francisco holds a collection of more that 80 thousand matchboxes, labels and matchbooks donated by Aquiles da Mota Lima to the Municipality of Tomar in 1980. The collection was born with an exchange of boxes between mota Lima and a lady during a sea voyage on their way to London for the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II. The collection represents about 127 countries in the world and is spread over 7 contiguous rooms. The exhibition sections are divided into 3 periods, from 1827 to 1895;, from 1895 to 1901 and finally from 1910 to the present.
