Portugal - Jewish Museum Of Belmonte

The contribution of Jews to the story of Belmonte is undeniable by the presence, still in nowadays , of a community and by the numerous traces left by previous communities.

As a way to honor this community and its history it has been built in 2004 the Jewish Museum of Belmonte , at the time the first in the country to address this issue and that became one of the most visited museums in the region, demanded by Jews from all over the world.

With refurbishment works, the Jewish Museum of Belmonte was reopened in August 2017. a museum project focused more on the specificity of the Crypto - Judaism of the Jewish Community of Belmonte, which for centuries practiced its religion secretly  within its houses walls and catholic rites abroad.

the former Jewish quarter of Belmonte , would be located around the current Rua Direita and Rua Fonte da Rosa ( This primitive Jewish Street). Right up the street , to the North , there is also a square, this oldest of Belmonte , which retains much of its early architecture. One can observe  small granite houses, ground floor , with small openings and with crosses in the door frames, which are also visible in other houses in Belmonte. These houses are flagged.

Also worth a visit the current synagogue of Belmonte, opened on 4 december 1996, under the name Bet Eliahou synagogue,.
