although references from 15th century already mention the enclosure, only in the 16th century the wall that surrounded approximately 39 hectares of land was restructured and organised. This was done following the layout of the originally exterior walls of the Templar castle of Tomar.
The enclosure made possible for the monks to be scheduled, enabling them to meditate and pray in communion with nature . This also enabled the convent community to use the grounds for agricultural purposes.
After the extinction of the religious orders, the properties of the Order of Christ were sold in public auction , including among them the Convent of Christ, acquired in 1838 by Antonio Costa Cabral.
In 1936, they returned to state ownership and 2 years later the enclosure was transformed into a forest park.
In 1986, it was listed into the National parks, Reserves and Nature Conservation Services, being from then on known as Mata dos Sete Montes. ( Seven Hills Park)
