Java island is administratively divided into 4 provinces, namely Banten, West Java, Central Java and East Java, as well as 2 special regions example Jakarta capital city special region and Yogyakarta special region. Numerous historical relics dot the island. One can even find prehistoric artifacts, such as the fossil of prehistoric man found on the banks of the Solo river, the Sangiran prehistoric site and
megalithic structures such as menhirs, dolmens, rock table and step pyramids ( punden berundak) tht formed parts of the Indonesian historical development.
Other historical heritage comprises temples. Many temples can be found throughout Java island. One of them is Borobudur temple, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. However ,the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia was constructed in the 9th century AD, namely the Prambanan temple or also known as the Rara Jonggrang temple. Established by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, it is located in the village of Prambanan , approximately 20 kilometres from Yogyakarta which is also one of the most beautiful temples in South East Asia.
At the main gate, we can find statue of Shiva Mahadeva measuring approximately 3 meters in height. It indicates the priority given to God Shiva in this temple compound, which justifies the naming of the 47 meters high main construction in the temple compound after this God.It is the location of the regular performance of the colossal Ramayana dance theater with the Prambanan temple as the natural backdrop and equipped with modern lighting that creates dramatic effects. It is amazingly artistic and impressive cultural performance.
In addition to the fascinating historical relics, the nature in this island holds its own enchantment. Picturesque beaches spawn from the Anyer and Carita beaches in Banten; the Parang Tritis Baron, Kukup , Krakal and Sundak beaches in Yogyakarta , Central Java and the Plengkung Beach in Banyuwangi , East Java. Another ecotourism object can be found in the Village of Kertayasa in Ciamis , West Java, known as the Green Canyon or locally referred to as Cukang Taneuh. Skirtling along the green river on a boat in between high cliffs gives you extraordinary feelings. Here you can enjoy the beauty of the cave while swimming inside it. The scenery is even more captivating as you see the Palatar waterfall decorating the Green Canyon cave. Dipping in the cold water while admiring the tall rocky cliffs and amazing stalactites and stalagmites must be a unique and unforgettable experience.
As for the mountainous landscape, what about enjoying the fresh air of the tea plantations dotting along the mountain top of the Puncak in Bogor, West java? Or admiring the wonder of Kawah Ratu crater in Mount Tangkuban Perahu in the northern part of Bandung, West Java? We can also travel further to East Java, to see the lofty Bromo Mountain . One of the attractions here is the 5250 hectare sand sea in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
Riding a horse across the sand sea sounds a lot of fun too. Visiting this place between the months of December and January may allow us to witness the local Kasodo ceremony. This ceremony is performed by the Tengger ethnic group on full moon as they pray for abundant harvest or the warding off of evil spirits and the recovery from various illness, by throwing offerings into the crater of Mount Bromo.
