Also known a Celebes, Sulawesi is the fourth biggest island of the Indonesian archipelago. It is divided into 4 administrational provinces, namely North Sulawesi Central Sulawesi , Gorontalo , West Sulawesi , South Sulawesi and South East Sulawesi. The most prominent tourist attractions in this island are ecotourism and marine tourism that grant the island the population of being a diver's paradise.
Before we dive into the amazing underwater world of this island , let us visit the Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park previously known as Dumogo Bone, situated in Gorontalo province. Here we can find the unique ecology of Wallaceae area, a transitional geographic area of yje Indomalayan in the west and the Papua-Australian in the east. Most of the animals in this national park consist of the Sulawesi endemic species such as Tangkasi or Tarcius , black monkey or yaki, dumoga bone monkey, big and small anoas and various species of birds. Maleo is the mascot of this national park. It is almost as big as chicken. Maeos bury their eggs 30-40 cm deep under the ground. It is the geothermal warmth that hatches the eggs. Witnessing Maleos digging holes for their eggs is a unique experience not to be missed.
Now is the time for us to visit North Sulawesi to see the underwater paradise, the Bunaken National Park. It represents the Indonesian tropical territorial waters ecosystem consisting of those of the mangrove forest, seagrass land, coral reed and the dryland or coastal ecosystem . Diving in Bunaken surely leaves an unforgettable experience. Colourful species of fish , sea eagle, moluscs and other sea biotas are worth capturing through underwater camera lens. In this park one can find underwater great walls also known as hanging walls or giant vertical and upward curving reef walls. Aside from Bunaken, Togean islands in Central Sulawesi store fascinating underwater wealth . Also renowned as the paradise for divers is Wakatobi in South East Sulawesi. The underwater beauty of Wakatobi encompassing approximately 25 clusters of coral reefs that comprise over 750 species makes this spot a highly potential destination for surfing, snorkeling and fishing activities.
