TAIWAN KAOHSIUNG - HISTORIC HERITAGE

1. OLD FONGSHAN CITY WALL, ZUOYING
Built in 1825, the Old fongshan City Wall at Zuoying is Taiwan's earliest stone and clay city wall.
During the Cing dynasty, Fongshan County's sovereign power covered the current Kaohsiung and Pingtung areas. Nowadays, the North, east and south gates and part of the wall are still kept and were designated as a Grade I national heritage site.

* East gate : take bus 301 or R38 to Chengfong road Stop
* South Gate : Take bus 217 to Haicing Vocational High School of technology and Commerce Stop
* North gate : take bus 301 to Shengil Road Stop

2. FORMER TANGRONG BRICK KILN
With Taiwan's first Bagua Kiln, Jhongdu Tangrong Brick Kiln was famous for its production of fine bricks and refractories for companies such as the Taiwan Sugar Corporation, China Steel, and others , making it a significant symbol of Kaohsiung's industrial development.Although Jhongdu has shut down its business , it bears witness to the development pf Kaohsiung City and its community history, so it was designated as a national historic heritage in 2005.

* Take the Kaohsiung MRT Red Line to Aozihdi Station (R13) and then transfer to circle bus 168 to the kiln.

3. FORMER BRITISH CONSULATE RESIDENCE AT TAKAO
Built by the UK government in 1865, the Former British Consulate Residence at Takao is the earliest existing example of western style architecture in Taiwan. Visitors can have meals , sip tea , enjoy the old building's romantic atmosphere and look out over  the Sizihwan Bay and the Port of Kaohsiung , so this spot has become one of the most popular scenic sites in Kaohsiung.

* 0900 to 2400 ( closed on the 3rd Tuesday of every month)
* Direction ; Take the Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line to Sizihwan Station (O1) and then transfer to shuttle bus Orange 1 to the site.

4. KAOHSIUNG MARTYRS' SHRINE
The Kaohsiung Martyrs' Shrine was originally a Japanese shrine. After World War II, the Taiwanese Government reconstructed it and renamed it the Martyrs' Shrine to commemorate the war victims and patriotic martyrs. The shrine is surrounded by pine trees, giving the area a natural feel. at the stairway before the monument's gateway visitors can look across the Port of Kaohsiung , so it is a popular spot to enjoy nighttime scenery.

*Address : In Shoushan National Nature Park
*Time : 0800- 1700 Tuesday To Sunday ( Closed on Monday)
*Direction : Take the Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line to Yanchengpu Station (O2)  and then transfer to bus 56 to the shrine.

5.KAOHSIUNG WUDE DOJO
During the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese Government built many dojos across Taiwan to promote Japanese martial arts spirit. Kaohsiung's Wude Dojo, completed in 1924, was traditionally where police and high school students practiced judo and kendo. It is the only existing historic building in Taiwan that has kept its original functions after restoration. Apart from martial arts, the space has come to integrated culture ,sports and tourism.

* Time : 0900- 1700 Tuesday - Sunday ( Closed on Monday)
* Take the Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line to Sizihwan Station and then transfer to shuttle bus Orange 1 to Gushan Market Stop. the Wude Dojo is just behind Gushan Elementary School.

6. CIHOU LIGHTHOUSE
Built in 1883 by English engineers, it is a Chinese style rectangular red brick lighthouse with a Baroque style bottom layer. The rear of the main building is an octagonal brick tower. As a municipal historic building, it provides an excellent view of the Port of Kaohsiung.

* Time : 0900- 1600 Tuesday - Sunday ( Closed on Monday)
* take the ferry from Gushan Ferry Terminal to Cijin and then transfer to bus 35 to Cihou Lighthouse Stop

7. CIHOU FORT
6 Chinese style cannons were mounted at Cihou Mountain during the Cing dynasty. the Cihou Fort boasts its Chinese style barracks, as well as Bazi ("8" in Chinese) doors and walls. "Wei Jhen Tian Nan  威震天南) are inscribed on the plaque over the gate, meaning " dominating the south " . In the wall 'Si" (喜喜)is embedded , which means double fortune.

* Take the ferry from Gushan Ferry Terminal to Cijin , walk along Miaocian Road and turn right at Tongshan Street . the walk takes approximately 10 minutes.

8. CIHOU TIANHOU TEMPLE ( MAZU TEMPLE)
Cihou Tianhou Temple ( Mazu temple ) whose history can be traced back to 1673, is the oldest and most important historic temple in Kaohsiung City and was designated as a National Grade 3 historic heritage site. The engravings, clay sculptures and porcelain works of temple are classic and refined. in addition to praying to Mazu for good luck, visitors can also appreciate these folk art masterpiece.

9. FONGSHAN CAOGONG CANAL & CAOGONG TEMPLE 
The Caogong Canal was built by the Fongshan County Magistrate Cao Jin in 1838 during the Cing Dynasty. It served as the largest irrigation network in southern Taiwan, providing a stable water source and greatly increasing the land's productive capacity. In order to commemorate Cao Jin, the people of Fongshan named the canal Caogong Canal and constructed Caogong  temple after his death. It's a story that everyone should become familiar with especially Fongshan residents,

*Address : Caogong Canal is spread through Fongshan District's downtown area including Guangfu * Road, Lijhih Street , Fongshan Railway Station.
* Tke the Kaohsiung MRT Orang Line to Fongshan Station ( O12) , walk along Guanyuan Road and turn left at Caogong Road.

10. CIAOTOU SUGAR REFINERY 
The Ciaotou Sugar Refinery was built in 1901. It has been designated a historic site and transformed into a leisure and tourist attraction. The refinery can be roughly divided into 2 parts : the office and dormitory. In the office section are many carved statues and examples of baroque architecture , while the dormitory section contains many Japanese garden structure. In addition to learning about the sugar refinery, visitors can also enjoy the quaint buildings and be enveloped in the park's exotic atmosphere.
