Dabawenyos, which is how local residents of the city are called, are mostly Visayans. The rest of the population are lumads or indigenous people (IP) belonging to different ethnolinguistic groups.

Sometimes Ataas or Agtas. The Spaniards called the people living in the upland areas Atas, lumping many tribes together. They are also called the people of the mountains, they are described as naturally shy, kind but are quick to anger . Atas were also capable of organizing vendetta or war bands ( pangayaw)
2. IRANUN
The word Iranun was derived from 2 words, the Ira and Nun. Ira means residue remains or silt referring of a place, area or the culture. Nun means the people therein , with distinct culture lawas and beliefs.
3. KALAGAN
K'GAN was derived from the word kaag that means " whisper" they are essentially Mandaya speaker. The dispersed Kagans apparently retained their ancient name Kagans when they were Islamized. The Kagan people are known as agriculturalists - cultivating rice, corn , abaca and coconut for cash crops. Those who are living near the coasts practice fishing.
4. KLATA GUIANGANS
They are called the forest dwellers. The Giangan ( pronounced Dyangan , Jangan or Diya-ngan as read) occupy a very small territory stretching from Catalunan to Calinan within Davao City. The Giangans, who were feared warriors, were also known for their fine artistry. They wore the most
beautiful and colorful clothes in the Gulf.
5. MAGUINDANAON
Maguindanaon means people of the flood plain for they mainly inhabit the broad Pulangi River valley and delta which occasionally flood. The Maguindanaon are subdivided into 2 principal groups, each with its own dialect and traditional locations:

The name Maranao ( ma, an adjective marker, plus ranao, "lake") means approximately , " Lake-like" hence, " by or near the lake", or " lake dwellers". They are brave and historically , offered sacrifices in defense of their homeland and to their religion, Islam. They take pride of their rich literature called Darangen and are known for sophistication in wood and metal crafts like the torogan.
7. MATIGSALOG
Matigsalog means people who live along the river. And this river is specifically Davao River which the Matigsalogs simply call Salog. The name Matigsalog is from the words Matig ( place of origin ) and Salog (river) . They are mostly located in the hinterlands of Marilog, Marahan or Paquibato.
8. OVU MANUVO
The Ovu Manuvos are known for their intricate casting, fine weaponry and jewelry. For them , these things possess souls also possess animate objects.
9. SAMA
The term " Sama" is a derivative of the word "Sama -Sama " meaning togetherness. They are described as a cohesive and peace loving people. They express themselves through verbal discussions and less through physical violence. Majority of Sama people in Davao City are living in the coastal barangays from Bunawan to Toril.
10. TAGABAWA
Tagabawa natives call themselves Bagobo. Tagabawa means people from the south. The Tagabawas occupy the districts of Marilog, Baguio, Calinan , Tugbok and Toril .

The Tasugs dominate over the island of Sulu. They are known as the People of the Current. They possess an unquestionable courage and bravery, therefore Tausug are Tau Maisug or " brave people".
