SUKARARA HANDWOVEN FABRIC
Artisans who create handwoven
fabric of Sukarara ( red : Sukerare) are originally from Sukarara Village –
Lombok Tengah , located 25 km from Mataram. From Mataram, you can take a minibus
from Bertais to Praya . For the service, you only need to pay 7500 rupiah. This
village has been the center of handwoven fabric production for generations,
since hundreds years until now. Local people maintain this skill adequately.
About its patterns, some are continuously developed along with the development
of arts in Indonesia.
Songket is the most famous type of
the products of artisans in Sukarara.Songket is a type of handwoven fabric made
by using certain technique,i.e by adding threads of woof( threads in a fabric
that go from side to side across the weft)using synthetic materials colored in
gold , silver and others.
The ornaments are inserted between the lusi (threads
in a fabric that go from both sides of longer edge across the weft). Products of
Sukarare is offered between 700,000 to millions rupiah. Prices are highly
determined by the degree of difficulty in the process of production and its raw
materials. Some cheaper products are also offered ranging between 10000 to
hundreds thousands rupiah, such as scarf, muffler, tablecloth and other similar
products.
Weaving is the main daily activity
of Sukara’s women, which also becomes the identity of the village. Moreover,
the fabrics are parts of traditional clothes of Sasak. People use it in customary
events involving religious scholars and public figures, as well as in a parade
of a wedding ceremony, which get through some customs and rituals. Among
Sukarara community, weaving is a compulsory skill for a woman, in order to ease
them to find a husband.
