PRESEAN
Other attractive indigenous
feature of Sasak society is presean , symbolizing manhood of Sasak me. A local
belief says that a man can get a wife after becoming a pepadu ( a Sasak word
refers to a fighter in presean).Practically , presean is a fight of 2 pepadu
using penjalin ( a stick made of rattan) and ende ( shield). In the flight, a
fighter is required to be shirtless and wearing sapuq ( Sasak headscarf) and
hold an ende on his left hand while a penjalin on the right. Every fighter
performs stamping step, beating and defending from his opponent, like a warrior
in a battle who is ready to beat his enemy.
A local sport demonstrating
agility involves 3 persons in charged as juries, 2 on the sides of the arena are called as
pekembar sedi while a pekembar as the chief jury. Both fighters compete their
manhood by beating an enemy in front of thousands spectators circling the arena.
Anyone can be a pepadu, not necessarily coming from a particular group. Even
someone from the audience can take part in a fight spontaneously. Pekembar sedi
offers someone to fight with while beating the shield using the stick.
After a deal has been made, both
fighters go to the center to start a fight. After a short preparation, both
fighters begin to attack each other. While in a battle, fighters perform unique
dance step to stimulate their opponent’s
emotion. Though dancing, both fighters in fact try to mark any weakness of
their opponent. Once a fighter can mark an opportunity, he begins to stamp on
and beat his enemy.
In presean , people should obey
listed rules of the game. First, a fighter is only allowed to hit stomach and
the upper opponent’s body parts. A battle is arranged to maximally 5 rounds, or
is discontinued after one of the pepadu is stated to be knocked out (KO) or
technical knocked out (TKO) by the jury when one of them is bleeding in their
head. To decide the winner after a complete 5 round battle, the pekembar will
count on scars in the fighters’body parts.
A fighter with more scars is decided
as loser. On the top of the rattan stick, material of asphalt is attached,
which makes scars on body parts or bleeding. Besides beating and defending
skills, a pepadu often casts a spell before starting a battle.
Despite it seen as violence, in
the end of a fight, both fighters hug and forgive each other. Morever , they
even become friends after the fight, even to someone who they just met. Both
fighters are prohibited grudge and make a fight out of the arena of presean. A
special made oil potion then curses all suffered scars. Surprisingly, it
quickly helps to cure the wounds. Another surprising thing about this local
attraction is the prize for the winner is only simple thing like soap or towel.
