SUMATRA
1. ALAS RIVER, ACEH (WILD STREAM OVERCASTED BY TROPICAL
FORESTS)
Streaming down from the Ache highland, the Alas River flows
to the south, finding its way through the Mount Leuser National Park. Being the
longest river in the west coast of Sumatra, the river offers a complete
adventurous journey comprising wild rapids, the beautiful view of virgin
forests and the joy of seeing a herd of elephants and a cartload of orangutans.
It is no surprise to learn that this river becomes the dream
of many rafters. Its attraction doesn’t lie solely on its rafting difficulty
levels that range from Grade 2 to 3, but also on its natural backdrops of dense
forests paddy fields and plantations. Even in Ketambe, after can be very lucky
to see orangutans.
For a one day trip, the adventure can begin from Serikil to
Ketambe or Natam, which is close o Kutacane.
A longer trip, on the other hand, can start from Ketambe to Gelombang in
South Acheh. This is a quite thrilling and fun expedition route, as it involves
3 full days of traversing tropical forests. A lodging facility for an overnight
stay is provided at every rest point.
The tourist spot, located in the Southeast Aceh Regency, is
such an enthralling place –thanks to its daunting scenery of tropical forests,
which is combines with a chance to visit the traditional village alongside the
Alas River. The River has flat to fast flow speeds with wild streams to be
conquered by those who are bold at heart. You can find some animals – like
primates, deer , elephants or birds - go
to the river for water. Wanting to enjoy the coldness and the purity of the
water? You are allowed to plunge into the river.

2. Asahan River, North Sumatra (Testing
world class rafting scene)
With its streams flowing from the Lake Toba through Porsea ,
Asahan Village – to the Betung Bay, Malaka Straits , the Asahan is a river with
fast and wild rushing streams, For experienced rafters who are bold at heart,
the Asahan offers wild and challenging gurgling rapids.
This rafting scene has rapids from Grade 1 to 6. The Grade 1
rapids are quite safe, while the Grade 6 – commonly called Rabbit Hole is
touted to be the most extreme and dangerous one. Meanwhile, the Grade 4 rapids
are suitable for commercial rafters.
The rafting route begins 3 km on a bridge called the Zero
point at Point at Parhitean Village, Toba Samosir. You can also start from
Sampuran Harimau at Tangga Village Asahan , then complete your journey to
Bandar Pulo, Asahan, which is around 30 km to the downstream. Since 2000, the
Asahan River has often become the arena for an international rafting championship.

3. LAU BIANG- SEI WAMPU (A RIVER WITH MANY NAMES)
This river is unique; it has several names, due to its rushing rapids that flow through 2 regencirs. In the Karo Regency, this river is called Lau Biang- meaning the Dog River, which is rooted from a local tale revealing that only dogs could make it to swim across the river.
The water is crystal clear, following pretty swiftly from the dense Mount Leuser National Park. Rafting across the Sei Wampu (the Wampu River) is such a temptation, as we conquer the Grade 2 rapids for around 4 hours. While taming down the rapids, we are taken to enjoy a virgin rain forest. Going for a longer trip? Add trekking after rafting, plus a safari with a jeep – all that will take more than 3 days. This adventure will take you to Bahorok, near the Mount Leuser National Park.
The rafting route usually starts from Kaperas, Maryke, Kutambaru, until the Bahorok Bridge in Langkat. The trip’s total distance is 22 km, with the travel time of 45 hours. A longer and more challenging route can begin from Rih Tengah, Karo, which is pretty difficult to reach. Besides going through heavy and rough road for 3 hours, you must go after trekking for 3 hours. Once you arrive in Rih Tengah, however, you will be greeted by exquisite scenery.
