WATERFALLS
There are plenty objects to see
waterfalls in Lombok, about 10 location across the land. The surrounding area
of Mount Rinjani also has a number of waterfalls, such as Sendang Gile, Tiu
Kelep , tele Batu, Tiu Pupus, Betara Lenjang, Kokoq Puteq, Otak Kokok, Jeruk
Manis and Mayung Puteq .
1. Sendang

Sendang Gile
waterfall is located in the foot of Mount Rinjani , exactly in Senaru Village,
Lombok Timur. If you leave from Senggigi, you will spend 2.5 hours drive on a
private car. Another alternative transportation service is public
transportation using engkel ( translation: the local term for a minibus
connecting regencies in Lombok). This kind of transportation service can be met
in the northern borderline of Mataram City and Lombok Barat or at Rembige Junction.
This intercity transportation service only brings you to Bayan bus station.
Choosing this service will take you in a 3 to 4 hours trip. From bayan, you
have to hire a motor taxi ( ojek) to Senaru village. However, this intercity
line might only be found in certain hours. Thus, it is suggested for you to
take the trip in a hired car.
Finding the spot
of Sendang Gile waterfall will force you to go through uphill footpath of
hundreds set of steps. The landscape is only accessed by walking from the gate.
At the gate, you are required to pay the retribution fee of 25000 rupiah. While
walking along the hundred sets of steps, your eyes will be spoiled by such a
beautiful natural panorama of a dense forest. By slowing down your walk, you
will reach the spot in 30 minutes. The thundering water from the spot begins to
fill up your ears while hiking the steps. You will find such a comfortable and
fresh ambience in the location, which pay all of your exhaustion after some
hour’s trip.
At a glance, this
waterfall looks like multilayer waterfall, but it is not. Water dropping from
the slope does not straightway touch the bottom of the pond, but it crashes
stones shaped like a small pool. Thus , from the small pool, water falls into
the bottom of the pond; therefore , it becomes a quite high waterfall . Sendang
Gile gets overflow water of Lake Segara Anak located in the crater of Mount
Rinjani. The water is so cold and makes our body feel its frozen sensation.
A local story
mentions that the local people discover the location while chasing a crazy
lion.In the local language, crazy lion is mentioned as sengang gile. After a
long process, the way of pronouncing the word sengang is changed into Sendang.
The word sendang in Javanese language has been adopted into Indonesian
language, to refer to a pool or small lake. Until now, people call this site as
Sendang Gile, which become a familiar name for the local people and tourist
from various countries.
