MOUNT RINJANI
Lombok and Sumbawa have 2 huge
historical mountains, Mount Rinjani in Lombok and Mount Tambora in Sumbawa.
Both are highly recommended as tourist destinations. Besides achieving the
status as a national park. Rinjani that has achieved various worldwide

Mount Rinjani is the second highest
volcano in Indonesia after Mount Semeru. It reaches 3726 meter ASL (above sea
level) , located at 8 degree 25’ Longitude
and 116 degree 28’ Longitude East, with an area of 41 330 hectare. Mount
Rinjani lies across administrative area of 3 regencies,i.e East Lombok, Central
Lombok and North Lombok. When you take a view from the shoulder of the
mountain, you will see the amazing scenery of the caldera in an area of 3500 x
4800 meter stretch along from the east to the west, on the west side of the
cone. You will be more flabbergasted when eye witnessing the stunning Lake
Segara anak laid over 11,000,000 square meter. The area of the lake has been
tightening along with eruption of the son of Rinjani, Mount Baru Jari - the newborn volcano. The new generation of
volcano is located beside the lake, under the Summit of Rinjani. Ho lava from
Mount Baru Jari spread over the lake narrowing the waters.
Lake Segara Anak
creates seven waterfalls between the shoulder and the foot of mountain. From
the summit of Rinjani , you can witness a not delayed view of northern part of
Lombok from the height.
While visiting Mount Rinjani,
there you may see the rich biodiversity and other natural objects. One of them
is Lake Segara Anak. The lake is laid on 2800 meter above sea level. From the
shoulder of Rinjani , Pelawangan , you will be offered to view such an exotic
panorama of the lake.
All exhaustion,after tracking the path from the gate
along some rest area throughout the mountain, is totally paid off. At
Pelawangan , visitors will find a camp area before leaving for Lake Segara
Anak. Usually , most of the mountaineers lodge in a camp at Pelawangan before
they reach the summit. The best time to start a walk to the summit is at 3 in
the morning, in order to enable them viewing the moment of sunrising on the
morning sky. You are not suggested to stay more than 15 minutes on the summit
and shortly down the mountain to avoid jeopardy situation or risk of calamity
at the location; especially gale blown from the side of the summit may endanger
climbers. At the site, you will find a flat area with sand and no grip to hold,
which troublesome for the climbers.
Down the summit of Rinjani, you
will be hasted up to the Lake Segara Anak. As a tip, it is suggested to equip yourself
with thick jacket and sunscreen lotion. One more thing, do not forget to bring
your fishing tools for you can experience fishing various fish,such as carp ,
mujair , gold fish, etc in the lake. Feel the sensation of fishing in the lake,
where fish may easily bite your baits.
Fishing is becoming legally organized
since the era of Soeharto, the second president of Indonesia. He began to
release seeds of fish to the lake, which becomes one of the most attractive
activities for the domestic mountaineers at Rinjani. On the side of the lake is
the most favourite site for the mountaineers to have a rest, set up their tents
and spend most of their holiday. They use the moment also to revive their
energy t down the mountain on the following day. For those who have more spare time
and willing to stay longer at the location, do prepare for more attractions
that you can visit all around Rinjani.
The weather in Mount Rinjani may
reach 5 degree Celsius or some even below when extremely rapid change of
weather takes place. The extreme temperature mostly occurs near the lake, which

Rinjani- TNGR) issues prohibition to mount during this harmful condition,
especially in the rainy season. It is permitted to enter the area starting from
May to August. Lake Segara Anak is situated on 2010 meter above sea level with
a depth reaching 230 meter shaped like a crescent.
AIK KALAK
Moving a bit from Lake Segara
Anak, you will see Aik Kalak Site ( Aik Kalak in local language Sasak means hot
water) . The source of the hot water , besides from bottom of the pond, comes
from a gulch of the pond shaped like a caldera. In this site, you can soak
yourself and feel the sensation from the water, which is believed, can cure
various kinds of illness.
People living around the foot of Rinjani often use
the water from the pond as medicine or theraphy for various skin deseases. It
is not surprising to meet local people or domestic visitors in the site who
want to prove the magical power of Aik Kalak.You can adjust the temperature of
the water by choosing one of smaller ponds to which water from the big ponds
flown.
