SEGANTER TRADITIONAL
VILLAGE
Not much different with Sade, one
of genuine village in Lombok Utara- located down the foothill of Mount Rinjani,
is also interesting destination for tourists. The village maintains its
originality until today. The traditional settlement is known as Segenter. Local
people in the village preserve and practice various symbols manifesting the reflection
of indigenous life of Sasak, especially for those live in Lombok Utara.
Obvious
contrast between Sade and Segenter is in their architecture and design,
including inner space and yard. A space to host guest and temporary lay corpse
before burial are located in the yard equipped with a small and simple
separated building looks like an open side’s shelter with roof, natives call it
as berugaq- looks similar with gazebo or bale bengong.
Even the 2 traditional villages
are apart almost 100 km both share some common properties. The only difference
is in architecture or design, especially on the shape of granary ( lumbung)
Segenter is the oldest village
that still maintains the genuine tradition of Sasak until today. In contrast to
Sade, houses in Segenter is made of bamboo as the only materials (no wood),
used as pole, wall, door as well as storage box or furniture is made of bamboo.
Similar to Sade, the floor is also made of mixed materials, i.e clay, latex and
feces of cows. 2 houses are set to face each other, while in the space between
the 2 houses a berugap is installed.
As mentioned earlier, berugaq is used to
host guests. Artistic design of berugae becomes the icon indigenous house of
Sasak people in Segenter, while Sade with its granary ( lumbung).
Nowadays, people may purchase
berugap in a number of places in Lombok, almost spread evenly in all regencies
in Lombok. However, some adjustments have been made as innovation to match
building. However, some adjustment have been made as innovation to match with
modern building.
For instance, the roof is no longer made of tatch grass and move to tin or tile roof. One of
sides are covered by wood or walls. Considering its function, berugap that
mostly installed in the house of Sasak people serves a function as a longue or
family room. So ,if you are interested to find out the genuine design and
function of indigenous building , you can come to see it in Segenter or Sade.
Price of a set of berugap in
Lombok is varied, ranged between 1,500,000 to 10 million rupiah that depends on
quality of wood used in the construction and preferred design. This unique
construction is most attracted foreigners from Germany and Dutch. Many berugaqs
have been exported to the 2 centuries, including France and Malaysia. In
Indonesia, many orders come from Jakarta and Surabaya. The largest supply of
berugaq is located in Gunung Sar Lombok Barat, or 5 km in the east of Senggigi.
