MALAYSIA KUALA LUMPUR HERITAGE SITE

1. MERDEKA SQUARE (DATARAN MEDRKA) FORMERLY KNOWN AS SELANGOR PADANG FIELD

Dataran Merdeka ( Independence Square) is the place where Malaysia’s Independence was proclaimed on 31 August 1957.

2. KUALA LUMPUR CITY GALLERY (FORMERLY KNOWN AS : THE GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE KUALA LUMPUR MEMORIAL LIBRARY)

YEAR BUILT: 1898

3.NATIONAL MUSIC MUSEUM (FORMERLY KNOWN AS FEDERATED MALAY STATES RAILWAYSTATION & SELANGOR WORKS DEPARTMENT)

YEAR BUILT: 1919
ARCHITECT: A.C. NORMAN
This 3 storey symmetrical building with a protruding porch and arches on the ground level expresses Moghul architecture eloquently

4.NATIONAL TEXTILE MUSEUM (FORMERLY KNOWN AS : FEDERATED MALAY STATES RAILWAY STATION & SELANGOR WORKS DEPARTMENT)

This building is distinguishable by its design of alternating red bricks and white plaster domes derived from Moghul architecture. Smaller white domes top the octagonal towers on each corner.

5. GOVERNMENT OFFICE( FORMERLY KNOWN AS: OLD GENERAL POST OFFICE)

YEAR BUILT: 1896
ARCHITECT: A.B.HUBBACK

Situated next to the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, this building was initiated by British, Resident W.E.Maxwell. It features leaf design roof tops and pediment, with polygonad corner stair towers
.
6.SULTAN ABDUL SAMAD BUILDING

YEAR BUILT: 1894-1897
ARCHITECT: A.C NORMAN & R.A.J BIDWELL

This building was used to house the “Federated Malay states’ administration in 1897, then the High Court and Supreme Court in 1972. It is now occupied by the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture. The first example of Moghul architecture in Malaysia, this elegant symmetrical brick structure features a 41 metre high clock tower, arched colonnades and copper domes.

7.KUALA LUMPUR CITY LIBRARY

YEAR BUILT: 1989
This building serves as a public library with an auditorium, conference area and a multipurpose hall

8.VICTORIAN FOUNTAIN (OVER 100 YEARS OLD)

It was brought in from England and assembled in Kuala Lumpur. It features some lovely Art Nouveau title work.

9.FLAG POLE

A 100 metre flagpole rising from Mederka Square is one of the tallest in the world. The Malayan Flag was hoisted on 31 st August1957 signifying the independence of the country.

10.ROYAL SELANGOR CLUB

This Tudor style building with its signature British colonial black and white half-timber was founded in 1884. Up to this very day the Long Bar only admits men.

11.LOKE MANSION (WAS OCCUPIED BY MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS –PAM)

YEAR BUILT: 1907
ARCHITECT: A.K.MOOSDEN
This was originally the residence of a Chinese tycoon,Loke Chow Kit.This building  features high quality Chinese architectural details such as elegant regency-styled balconies. Since 1973, this heritage gem has been occupied by PAM until 2014.

12.WISMA EKRAN (FORMERLY KNOWN AS ANGLO ORIENTAL BUILDING –MINING.COM)

YEAR BUILT: 1936
This is a fine example exhibiting the Electric Art Deco style. In its reinforced concrete structure are masonry walls and rendered Shanghai plaster.

13.THE CATHEDRAL OF ST MARY

YEAR BUILT: 1894
ARCHITECT: A.C. NORMAN

This is the first brick church in the Federated Malay States and it is also one of the oldest Anglican churches in the region. It is a fine example of early English Gothic style revived in the 19th century.

14.CITY THEATRE –PANGGUNG BANDARAYA KL (FORMERLY KNOWN AS OLD CITY HALL)

YEAR BUILT: 1896
ARCHITECT: A.B.HUBBACK

A.B HUBBACK embellished the Old City Hall with different versions of Islamic arches and chhatris (dome shaped pavilions) on the roofline. The black dome on the grand porte –cochere differentiaties it from the rest of the surroundings buildings.

15.OLD SESSIONS & MAGISTRATES COURT BUILDING (FORMERLY KNOWN AS FEDERATED MALAY STATES SURVEY OFFICE)

YEAR BUILT: 1910
The first cluster of colonial buildings is made up of 3 adjoining structures which host the offices of the session’s courts and Magistrates Courts. The grandeur and solemnity of these buildings features a long colonnade of lovely clover shaped arches capped by dramatic black domes.

16. FORMER HIGH COURT BUILDING

YEAR BUILT: 1909
ARCHITECT: A.B.HUBBACK
This 2 storey building has a Moorish exterior with 4 towers. The towers have projecting cornices and are capped with cupolas with numerous flying protruding structures from their bases.

17. MASJID JAMEK (JAMEK MOSQUE)

YEAR BUILT: 1909
ARCHITECT: A.B HUBBACK
Masjid Jamek is the first brick mosque in the city. It was constructed on the first Malay Burial Ground in Kuala Lumpur. One of Kuala Lumpur’s most significant buildings of Moghul influence architecture and heritage, it features 3 Moghul domes, a courtyard, and minarets set at a symmetrical composition of the mosque and smaller chhatris surrounding it.

18. PERDANA BOTANICAL GARDENS (FOR MERLY KNOWN AS SYDNEY LAKE/LAKE GARDENS)

YEAR BUILT: 1890

The Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park lush with greenery and an undulating landscape, was once the site of the Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens.Taman Botanic Perdana, better known as the Botanical Garden,is the oldest sanctuary in Kuala Lumpur. In 1889,, the State treasurer, Alfred Venning opened Sydney Lake to honour Lady Sydney Swettenham , the wife of Sir Frank Swettenham, Govenor of the Straits Settlements .This enclave has been expanded to 100 hectares from them.

19.NATIONAL MONUMENT

YEAR BUILT : 1966
SCULPTOR : FELIX DE WELDON

This monument was erected to commemorate those who had died in Malaysia’s struggle for freedom, particularly during World War II and the Malayan Emergency. Tunku Abdul Rahman commissioned sculptor Felix de Weldon to sculpt a 15.54 metre high bronze monument depicting seven men. The monument sits on a hilltop overlooking the Parliament House and the serene Perdana Botanical Gardens. Just beside, the ASEAN Sculpture Gardens feature modern works by artists from Southeast Asian countries.

20. ORCHID & HIBISCUS GARDENS
More than 800 species of wild * commercial orchids and hibiscus can be admired here.Hibiscus or Bunga Raya is the Malaysian national flower.

21. BIRD PARK
This is the largest covered aviary in Southeast Asia housing over 3000 birds, a large number of hornbills. The park is also a tropical paradise with gardens, pools, bridges, flowering plant and a bird feeding station.

22.. NATIONAL MOSQUE

YEAR BUILT: 1965
 ARCHITECT: HOWARD ASHLEY, HISHAM ALBAKRI AND BAHARUDDIN KASSIM

The National Mosque or Masjid Negara is one of the most unique mosques in the world. It has a generous serambi space with a modernist representation that portrays the message of Islamic progress as well as humility. It does not follow the conventional Middle Eastern mosque design of domes and arches.

23. ISLAMIC ART MUSEUM

The building is across between a modernistic and traditional Middle Eastern architecture.

24. KL RAILWAY STATION &KTM (HQ)

YEAR BUILT: 1904 & 1910
ARCHITECT: A.B.HUBBACK

These buildings are a fine example of the British colonial adaptation of western Moorish architecture has the 13th &14Th century Ottoman and Mogul empires as well as Gothic and ancient Greek designs. A flurry of minarets, colonnades and arches form a lovely gateway into the city centre.

25.NATIONAL MUSEUM (MUZIUM NEGARA)

YEAR BUILT : 1963

The National Museum was the first to use a modernistic interpretation and integration of Malay architecture. The mural on the east side of the building illustrates the economic activities, traditional ceremonies and customs o inherited by the Malaysian society .The mural on the west side signifies events of Malay history , including the eminent Malacca  Malay Sultanate, colonization and independence of Malaysia in 1957.

26. BUKIT BINTANG –KUALA LUMPUR’S GOLDEN TRIANGLE

Buikit Bintang is at the h7art of the Golden Triangle which covers  Jalan Raja Chulan, jalan sultan Ismail , Jalan Ampang and from Jalan Imbi to jalan pudu. Bukit  Bintang or also known as “Star Hill” is synonymous with shopping and entertainment .Many hotels ,restaurants and hawker-styled eateries are  located  here. Bintang Walk, located along Jalan Bukit Bintang shopping strip, has a row of street side cafes , restaurants and pubs. At night, it comes alive, when live jazz music is played and the whole place is beautifully lit up.

28.  KL TOWER & Kl ECO FOREST PARK ( FORMERLY KNOWN AS BUCKET WELD FORESTRESERVE)

YEAR BUILT: 1995
ARCHITECT: KUMPULAN SENIREKA

Menara Kuala Lumpur or Kl Tower, stands tall at the peak of Kl Eco Forest Park , one of the oldest forest reserve in the country and the only remaining tropical rainforest at the heart of the city Kuala Lumpur. It is the seventh tallest telecommunications tower in the world and the tallest in South East Asia. Standing at 421 meters, the tower was constructed with utmost care to the environment and in particular to protect the over 110 years old Jelutong Tree. Located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, it includes a myriad of facilities , which includes The Observation Deck, Revolving restaurant Atmosphere 360 degree Celsius, 1malaysia cultural village and souvenir shop. Open daily from 9am until 10pm

28.THE PETRONAS TWIN TOWER

YEAR BUILT 1998

Situated the former site of the Selangor Turf Club, the Petronas Twin Towers were once the world’s tallest buildings at a height of 452 meters. The 88 floors are constructed largely of reinforced concrete, with a steel and glass façade designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic architecture. The towers feature a skybridge largely of reinforced concrete with a steel and glass façade designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic architecture. The towers feature a skybridge at the 41st and 42nd level; this bridge is the highest 2 storey bridge in the world. KLCC spans 100acres with jogging and walking paths. It also has a Symphony Lake Fountain and a massive tropical garden with approximately 1900 indigenous trees and palms. 29. AQUARIA KLCC

Aquaria KLCC is a state of art oceanarium showcasing over 5000 different exhibits of aquatic and land bound creatures over sprawling 60000 square feet space at the Concourse Level of Kuala Lumpur Convention Center.
