SINGAPORE NATIONAL ORCHID GARDEN
Since 1859, orchids have been closely associated e Singapore
with the Singapore Botanic Garden.The products of the Garden’s orchid breeding
programme, which began in 1928, deserve a place where they can be displayed in
their full splendor. The very design of these orchids is , one could say,
“hand-crafted” by the Gardens horticultural staf, dedicated to bringing out the
finest in any hybrid cross.
Over 1000 species and 2000 hybrids are now found in the
Garden’collection and every year, more vibrant and enduring hybrids will be
added on. So that all may admire and enjoy their diversity, richness and
beauty,the National Orchid Garden now offers a permanent showcase , the largest
display of orchids in the world.
NATIONAL FLOWER OF SINGAPORE
Chosen to be the National Flower of Singapore in 1981, this
exquisite orchid was discovered by Miss Agnes Joaquim in her garden in 1893.
ORCHIDARIUM
The Orchidarium is where most of the wild orchids displayed
in the National Orchid Garden are to be seen. Despite generally being show less
showy and free flowering then the cultivated orchids, the wild ones often have
delicate and intricate blooms.
BURKILL HALL
Built in 1866, this colonial bungalow is an excellent
example of tropical architecture. Once home of the Garden’s directors; the all
is now used to host VIP events and other functions.
ORCHID TERRACE & WATER FEATURES
Three hectares of orchid terraces are enlivened by tropical
foliage and water features such as the Crane Fountain and the Tiger Orchid
Fountain.
COOL HOUSE
The Cool House encloses a montane tropical forest. Trees and
rocks are draped with a profusion of spectacular orchids and fascinating
carnivorous plants. The cool air, drifting mist and rushing torrent provide a
highly realistic representation of high elevation sites in the tropics and make
for an unforgettable experience.
