PORTUGAL BATALHA –MONASTERY OF SANTA MARIA DA VITORIA
It marks a turning point in the Portuguese .History and is
also a Royal Pahtheon. It celebrates the victory of the Portuguese troops over
the Castillians in the Battle of Aljubarrota in the year of 1385. The building
is a great masterpiece of the Portuguese Gothic style reflecting at the same time
the new artistic current, named Manueline that spread through put the country.
It represents a high point of the Portuguese architecture and is therefore one
of the most visited monument in Portugal.
The Monastery of
Santa Maria da Vitoria is part of UNESCO ‘ s World Heritage restricted
network since 1983.
The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitori was erected in the
late 14th century by the order of the King Joao I. The work required
innumerous resources both human and material, lasting for over 200 years. It is
the most meaningful monument relating to the Portuguese Gothic style.
It was a field of work that boosted the upcoming and
perfecting of many arts and techniques like the stained glass windows.
According to some Historians this technique has first appeared in the country
in this Monastery.
The monument comprises a variety of styles which due to the
diversity of backgrounds of the masters that lead the works through
times.Afonso Domingues, Huguet, Martim Vasques, Fernao D Evora e Mateus
Fernandes and others. The last structural intervention is dated from the decade
of 30 of the 16th century when the Tribune of the Unfinished Chapels
was built.
In the 20th century, more precisely in 1910, it
was classified as a National Monument and in 1983 it was given recognition by
the UNESCO as World Heritage Site. In 2007 the monastery was voted as one of
the Seven Wonders of Portugal. Recently awarded the statues of National
Pantheon. The Monastery and the heritage around are the starting point to get
to know the Municipality of Batalha.
